What is your position in WXJM?
I’m currently the General Manager, 1/3 of the Big 3.
How did you get involved with WXJM?
My friend Emily Wyman (who was GM last year) was always involved and she mentioned it to me and since I love music I figured I’d get involved a few years ago.
What changes are you bringing to WXJM this year?
One of our big goals at the station is to have more involvement in the JMU community so we’ve been putting on weekly music movie nights, having more concerts (Shout out to Diarrhea Planet coming on 11/6 to Clementine Cafe…) and also within the organization have more of a connection. A difficulty with college radio is that people have their 2 hour shows once a week, but there aren’t many times we’re all together as a group, and we’re working to change that by putting on more events, like our Pumpkin Carving Competition on October 30th.
What is your favorite part of being involved with college radio?
There are so many things that I love about being involved; one big thing is that amazing group of people I get to work with on a day-to-day basis. Everyone has the same love of independent music and it’s always a great sounding board for new music and ideas as well. I think the thing I love the most though is the 2 hours I have each week for my show where I’m able to play new music that I love and my cohost and I can chat about it all and share it with all the people who listen in (Accidental Denim Vests, Monday 4-6…)Â
How was the College Music Journal (CMJ) Music Marathon?Â
Incredible. Being able to go up to CMJ every year is such an amazing experience, we see so many up and coming bands, go to great panels all directed towards college radio and get to meet a ton of people in the industry. It’s a really welcoming community of people and just all around an amazing way to get a feel for how college radio works, and also eat a lot of pizza.
