Put down that cell phone and take a good look at your fingernails. If they’re bare, chipped, or downright embarrassing, you need to start thinking about your next nail design… now!  Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and your nails could use some lovin’. You better not be deciding between pink and red, because February 14th is the perfect excuse to go all out with your nails! It’s time to make fabulous use of playful colors, glitter, flirty designs, and hearts… lots of hearts.

Collegiette, you’ve got options:

Water Marbling
Water marbling gives your nails a unique, swirly appearance. You create patterns in a cup of water with nail polish and dip each of your nails in it for a whimsical design. Check out HC JMU’s V-log for a how-to guide on your own Valentine’s Day water marbled nails!

Nail Pen Designs
You can do so much with just a few nail art pens! Using a white, red, or pink nail pen, write X’s’s and O’s on top of your nail color. You could also write: I ♥ LOVE ♥ YOU — one letter or heart on each fingernail!

Sweet Hearts
Here’s an idea from the blog, Fab Fatale. Paint each nail a pastel color that correlates to a candy heart and write a cute message on each nail. You could write: “QT pie,” “U R SWEET,” “Be Mine,” “Call me,” “ILY,” or “Me + You.”

Nail Polish Strips
Sometimes spending thirty minutes on nail decorating just doesn’t make it into your schedule; especially when taking trips to UREC in order to burn off those D-hall dessert calories is higher on your priority list! Nail polish strips make it so easy to have stellar nails in just ten minutes and they last up to ten days!

 Glitter
How could you resist jazzing up your nails with sparkly nail polish for Valentine’s Day? Remember dumping red glitter all over your sticky Valentine’s Day card for your fourth grade crush?  Well your nails could be just as enchanting with a bit of shimmer – a fourth grade throwback with lots of sparkle!

Understated
Not every collegiette is a crazy decorator. Simple, one-color manicures can be totally fitting for the occasion. My favorite basic nail color is light, almost white pink, like ‘Princesses Rule’ or ‘Hearts and Tarts’ by OPI. These shades match all different colors of clothing and are truly feminine colors.

Don’t fret if you aren’t a pink lover. You don’t even have to use a typical Valentine’s Day color for your manicure. Make it “you” by using colors you love! After all, you’re the one that has the privilege of looking at them every day!
