Love Yourself this Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

I haven’t had a valentine in eight years. I don’t want any pity, I just need to give some background. I’ve spent years moping in mid-February for no reason and I’m tired of it.

I wouldn’t say that I’m against Valentine’s Day, it’s more that I want to refocus my energy. I think it’s time we start loving ourselves before we rely on boys to buy us chocolate and flowers. Heck, we can buy our own chocolate and flowers.

This holiday should be about you.

Take time for yourself and enjoy doing something you love. Take a hot bath. Use a facemask. Treat yourself to a manicure. Read your favorite book. Paint something. Whatever you love doing, do it.

Your passions are what make you YOU and that’s beautiful. Celebrate it.

You don’t need a man to treat yourself right.

It’s always nice to get presents, especially when they’re in a heart-shaped box. But if you’re single, that’s okay.

Remember those roses you saw at the store that made you sad because no one in your life is going to buy you them? Wrong. You can buy them. Anything you want (within reason) can be a treat to yourself.

Love is in the air.

Take this opportunity to notice how transcendent love can be. Every rom-com you’ve ever watched shows a girl who meets a boy that changes her life forever, Love can move mountains.

So, it’s not crazy to say that the love you have for yourself can do the same.

When you start to love yourself, you start to treat yourself better— with more compassion and understanding. You start to put yourself first in more situations than ever before.

Use this day to transcend your life. Self-love is more important than romantic love.
