How to Style Your Hair AND Have It Hold in the Humidity

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

Are you sick of settling with the messy bun as a quick fix for your hair? What about the “you can only wear your hair in a pony tail once a week” rule? For those of you with frizzy hair, I feel your pain. Frizz is something not easily combated, especially in the valley of Harrisonburg. I for one do not like to take but maybe 15 minutes on my hair in the mornings, because I like sleep. But there are some quick fixes to help keep that unruly hair under control!

If you’re like me, you like having your hair down. But it’s also either curly or wavy (or easily holds curls and waves) Beach Babe (a sea salt texturizing spray) is the way to go! You can find it at CVS, Walmart, Martin’s, or really anywhere that has basic hair styling products. You can spray it on wet or dry hair (as much or as little as you see fit, depending on hair thickness/natural curl), and scrunch the hair- or don’t! It’s probably the easiest styling trick ever. To the right is what my hair looks like when I brush it right out of the shower, towel dry it for about 15 minutes, then spray liberally until I think I’ve gotten everything. Then I usually air dry, but you can use a diffuser to help the curls set.

If you like to wear your hair up but don’t want to waste time doing an actual up-do, a sock bun is a great solution! Put a little bit of coconut oil on the lower half of your hair to do a deep condition while it’s up, too! This helps repair some split ends as well as keep frizz from happening. It’s really easy and there are tutorials all over YouTube and Pinterest if you need a little assistance.

Another great way to keep hair out of your face while looking cute is really any kind of braid. Fish tails, French, or even just a traditional braid. If you’re not super talented when it comes to braids, that’s ok! The messier, the better! That way if you decide to take it out later, you have natural looking waves. I suggest putting conditioner (can be leave-in or regular!) when your hair is damp and then braiding it. It helps to moisturize and hold the waves without them looking greasy (the way oils can sometimes do).

Now, if you like to actually style your hair, say straighten or curl it definitely pay close attention. Use a heat protecting spray, ALWAYS. Then use some sort of styling cream when your hair is wet. It tells your hair who’s boss before even starting!

If you straighten your hair, straighten like normal and then finish with a SMALL drop of the styling serum again, only the lower half of your hair to once again avoid it looking greasy.

If you curl your hair with a flat iron, finish with Tresseme Extra Firm Hold all day humidity resistant hair spray. Also spray a little bit of a shine mist, it has enough oil to control frizz without it weighing down the curls.

If you prefer your hair to be curly, and you use a wand or curling iron, invest in extreme hold mousse for curly hair (even if you don’t have curly hair)! You’re going to divide your hair in sections and put the mousse on very liberally with your hands. Then use a brush or comb to have it worked through your hair. Then, curl your hair like you normally would (the mousse doesn’t have to be completely dry!) Finish with Tresseme Extra Firm Hold all day humidity resistant hair spray. It’s amazing! To the right are examples of hair after an entire football game with these techniques.

Have you ever thought "Am I the only one who..."? I'm sure you have, and I promise you're not. Live the life you love. I don't take things too seriously, because life is too short to be so obsessed with what everyone thinks of me. I became a writer so I could say what everyone else is thinking. I believe that treating others the way you want to be treated means you will never have to regret a decision you make. I make mistakes, but that's what makes great articles!
