How New York Fashion Week Will Affect Your Fall Wardrobe

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

Two weeks ago, Facebook, Pinterest and Tumblr newsfeeds were flooded with photos of rail-thin models showcasing jaw-dropping gowns, engulfed in fur, and even one model donning only shorts and heels (using her bare hands as cleavage coverage). Models weren’t the only ones getting face time on your newsfeeds. Fashion show attendees were heavily photographed for their own style. Many of these stylish trendsetters changed their outfits three times throughout the day’s runway shows. All this for the largest media event in New York City…

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, the fashion showcase event of the season, takes place in New York City from February 7-14 at Lincoln Center (one of the most respected arts and cultural institutions in the world). Dubbed “New York Fashion Week,” the event gives top designers the chance to show off their fall 2013 ready-to-wear collections in front of more than 100,000 buyers, editors, celebrities, retailers and other fashion industry insiders. #NYFW is a world-renowned event where designers, models, celebrities and fashion enthusiasts celebrate the best of fashion and beauty and prepare to change their closets for fall 2013.

The most popular trends from NYFW will undoubtedly be on the racks next fall. New York Fashion Week lets you decide which trends you’ll wear and which trends you won’t!

Here are five top trends for fall 2013:

1. Leather

Altuzarra, Herve Leger by Max Azria, Diesel Black Gold and many other designers used leather throughout their collections. Leather has been a trend, but it will make bigger appearance this coming fall. Be on the lookout for more leather that you can add to your closet. You might not opt for a full leather ensemble, but accent pieces can give your fall 2013 outfit the perfect amount of stylish edge that will set you apart from everyone else.

2. Sheer

These Reem Acra, Christian Siriano and Marchesa pieces are beautiful examples of the sheer trend. Some designers went all-out with sheer-chested dresses, but these three designers created tasteful dresses placing sheer material on the sleeves, neckline and middle-front sections of the pieces. As fashion-savvy collegiettes, we probably own a sheer top or two that we wear out at night, but next fall you’ll see sheer pieces that will be classy enough to wear to class or to an interview.

3. Metallic

Badgley Mischka, Marc Jacobs and Diane von Furstenberg have the glitz and glamour down pat. Metallics and sequins are making a return to fashion in the form of pants, tops, skirts, jackets and dresses. Metallic pencil skirts and gowns cater perfectly to fashionistas both young and old. This trend is perfect for collegiettes who love to shine night and day!

4. Fur

Most of the fur outfits on the runway would never translate to campus life at JMU. However, fur is everywhere on the runway. From full-out fur ensembles to simple fur linings and scarves, this trend is big. Buying fur pieces from stores like H&M and Forever21 can be dicey. Fur can look really cheap and hideous or fashion-forward and elegant. Be sure to get a second opinion on the fur piece you’re crazy about this October before you catwalk through the Commons in it. 5. Red

There were so many “in” colors on the runways but red really stuck out. Red was not just used for formal wear but for everyday outfits too (check this one out). This hot color is perfect for collegiettes who want to exude confidence, sexiness and attract the eye of the campus cutie in your dreaded Gen Ed. Next fall, invest in a couple classic red pieces, like a blouse or dress, and you’re sure to be a hit. Pictured below: Penny Parkham, Badgley Mischka, Marchesa.
