How to have the best Valentines day ever… without a boyfriend!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

Flowers, chocolates, rom-coms, what could be better? Valentine’s day is such an amazing holiday for those in a relationship, but if you are like me, celebrating without a boyfriend, Valentine’s day can be scarier than Halloween. I have been boyfriend-less for a good number of Valentine’s, and I have learned some tips and tricks on how to make this holiday work for you because there is nothing wrong with celebrating being an independent and single gal.

Galentine’s day

I love celebrating Galentine’s day on Valentine’s day itself. This is a great way to celebrate the ones you love (your BFFs) because isn’t that what this holiday is all about? You can have a cute movie night or stay in and make dinner. You could go shopping, paint your nails, do face masks, there are so many possibilities. I would recommend staying away from two things 1. Any nice restaurant and 2. Any movie that will make you wish you were watching it with a boy instead of your girls.

Self Love Day

As I said earlier, Valentines are all about love, so why not give that love to yourself. I have a few articles on self-love (shameless plug go check them out). The longest and most important relationship you will ever have is the one with you, so make it a good one. Spend some time reading a book, meditating, learning something, trying yoga, complimenting yourself, journaling, the list goes on!

Stay off social media

I am on social media every day… It’s pretty bad. I run the social media for my sorority as well as my personal Instagram, so I spend a lot of time there. Last year I made a bet with myself to stay off social media all day. It’s a great challenge that I should be doing more, but on Valentine’s day, it’s especially beneficial. You are avoiding looking at the cute happy couples professing their love to their few hundred Instagram followers. It is also important to keep in mind that social media doesn’t tell the truth, and chances are not every single one of those couples are as happy as they look.

Candy on the 15th

There is NOTHING better than discount chocolates! Right after the holiday is over everything goes on sale, flowers, teddy bears, and candies. There are quality chocolates in the shape of a heart 50% off. Talk about self-love, I am buying myself some discount candy!

Have an amazing Valentine’s day!

Xoxo,
