Hitting High Notes on Campus: Unaccompanied

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

Before the smash hit movie, Pitch Perfect, hit the scene, a capella was already thriving on the campus of JMU. With 7 previously established singing groups on campus, the chance of seeing these talented students perform is an easy task! Luckily for music fans,  the a cappella community here at JMU continues to grow as a new group has emerged.

Unaccompanied is JMU’s newest all-female a cappella group, and they are quickly making a name for themselves within the student body. In the fall of 2010, these talented girls wanted to give a fresh perspective and sound to the a capella community, so they started their own group. With a few bumps in the road including a change in leadership and trying to decide on the best name for their group, they strive to overcome their challenges together.

President of the group, Megan Vela, believes that Unaccompanied is unique in a special way. They are very community based, as they focus on giving back to not only the JMU community, but the Harrisonburg community as well. Currently, Unaccompanied is not recognized by JMU as an official organization, which can cause setbacks, but that only motivates them to perform as much as they can.

This year, Unaccompanied has performed for the promotion of UPB’s Pitch Perfect Advanced Showing, Safe Rides’ “Weird” 5k, the M.A.D.D. Benefit Concert, Harrisonburg High School’s Class of 1972 Reunion, and have also sung for Our Community Place in the past. Most recently, they attended UPB’s Disney Week a capella showcase, where they performed an entertaining Disney medley! Her Campus JMU is also lucky to have this group performing for our first Fashion Show and Launch Party tonight! Stop by Transitions, 2nd floor Warren Hall, November 29th at 7:00 p.m. to discover the sound of these talented women.

Dedicated, talented, and passionate about music, they are proud to have each beautiful and unique voice, and to sing together without music that’s truly, unaccompanied. Check out more of their performances on their YouTube page!www.youtube.com/user/jmuunacco…
