The Hardest Back To School Goodbye: Pets & Furry Friends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

If you’re anything like me, your dog/cat/hedgehog/etc. is a huge part of your life. Whether you’ve had that pet for 6 months of 12 years, furry friends have a serious place in my heart. So naturally, as much as couldn’t wait to come back to JMU, I couldn’t believe I had to leave my two perfect dogs.

First you’re in denial.

Then it hits you.

You try and smother them with enough attention to hold them (and lets face it, you) over.

You debate bringing them with you.

You make plans to safely transport them, even.

Then you have a reality check and remember you have to leave them behind. You soak up every last second you have with them.

The actual goodbye is heartbreaking, and you probably took enough pictures to fill up your storage (again).

Within 24 hours of moving in, you text your parents asking for pictures of your pets.

Within one week, you ask if you can facetime with your pets.

But then you realize: you get to see them in a few weeks!

And all is well. Until then, you’ll have to settle for one of the best furry friends there is: the Duke Dog.
