8 Stages of Denial We All Go Through Before Finals Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

Its a couple weeks before finals officially start, and everyone is already stressing out while professors are putting the final touches on their deadly combinations of cumulative exams and fifteen page research papers. And when finals week finally hits, no one is safe. But, until then here are 8 stages of denial we all go through before the end begins.

1. Ignorance is Bliss Stage

Finals? What are finals?

2. Illusion of Time Stage

Finals are still two weeks away. You’ve still got plenty of time to binge watch Friends before then.

3. Procrastination Stage

You’ve still got a week to write that paper and it isn’t even due until midnight. Might as well put it off for a little bit longer.

4. Overconfidence Stage

Your first final is five days away and you’re feeling pretty confident that at some point between checking Facebook and falling asleep during class you managed to retain a majority of the material. You’ve totally got this.

5. Just Keep Swimming Stage

It’s finally starting to sink in that finals start in three days and after looking at the study guide, you’re beginning to realize that you totally don’t “got this.” You may be drowning in three months’ worth of lecture notes, but at least you’ve still got three days to learn it all?

6. I Don’t Need Sleep Stage

You’ve got less than twenty four hours before finals start and you’re going to need every minute of it to cram as much info into your brain as possible. You’ve decided that you can sleep when you’re dead.

7. The Everything Hurts and I’m Dying Stage

You just finished your last final and you feel like you’ve just completed a triathlon. Your brain is fried and all you want to do is curl up in your bed with some Ben and Jerry’s and a couple episodes of Parks and Rec.

8. Summer Break Stage

Thankfully you’ve managed to survive finals week with minimal injuries. Now it’s time to kick back, relax, and enjoy your free time until your finals week denial makes its return next semester.
