5 (Non-Cliché) Valentines Day Gifts for Your Significant Other

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

Valentines Day is looming over our heads, and while the single guys and girls of this campus are either A) choosing to ignore this love filled holiday, or B) spending it with friends and family and using this time as a chance to love themselves more as individuals, those of us girls who are in relationships are forced to face the ultimate question: What do I get my significant other for Valentines Day? Boys have it easy—buy some flowers, chocolates, and maybe even throw in some jewelry and they’re usually set (Unless, of course, you’re like me and aren’t totally into that mushy gushy kind of stuff).  For us girls, however, we don’t get off so easy. What do we get our boys? Flowers and jewelry certainly won’t do, and just chocolates are definitely on the boring side. After some deep thinking and searches on the Internet, I’ve compiled a list of 5 Valentines Day gifts that are sure to be a hit with your significant other (or at least I hope so). Although I can’t guarantee that they’re all cheese-free, they are all unique and fun ideas that will maybe even spark an interest in your S.O for YOUR next year’s V Day gift (ahem, no more flowers and chocolates.)

# 1) When it comes to winning over a boy’s heart, there’s not much that can compete with food, especially pizza. And HEART shaped pizza?! Now that’s a double whammy. Treating your boy with this delicious surprise is a simple, cheap, and romantic way of saying, “I love you,” and it’s a great alternative to spending a ton of money at an expensive restaurant. To make the night even more spontaneous, check out the five dollar movie bin at Wal-Mart or any other nearby store, and randomly pick out a few flicks to watch while you’re enjoying your pizza (the more random the movies the better—nothing says a romantic time like watching the Brave Little Toaster together).

#2) This next idea takes a little more time and effort, but it’s definitely worth it. A photo book not only shows him how much you care, but also allows you to document all of the memories the two of you have made together! You can create and order a personalized photo book on the Internet for roughly between 20 and 40 bucks, depending on the size, from websites such as Snapfish and Shutterfly. I actually made one for my boyfriend for Christmas last year and he absolutely loved it. On these websites you’re able to add photos, text, backgrounds, and whatever other designs you can think of to the different pages of the book! You can organize the pages by a certain theme or make it completely random—it’s all up to you! Either way, a photo book is a great way to give your significant other a gift that’s memorable and lasting.

#3) This is a cute and fun DIY gift that requires little supplies. Fill up this coupon book with different “deals” for your significant other—one free movie of his choice, one free “being right” pass (even when he’s not), and more!

#4) Another DIY gift, “52 Things I Love about You,” also requires little supplies and is a fun and unique alternative to a simple card! I’m not gonna lie, this gift is a bit  more on the cheesy side…okay, a lot on the cheesy side (told you I couldn’t promise). BUT, it’s still adorable. Fill each separate card with a different reason, short or long, of why you love your S.O, bind the cards together, decorate the front, and you’re good to go! Now let’s just hope you can think of 52 whole reasons…

#5) My personal favorite: The mix tape—because why not take V Day back to the days when people actually made each other mix tapes? Granted, it’ll probably be more of a mix-CD, but it’s the thought that counts. Compile a list of his favorite songs, that one song you heard in the car with him that one time, songs that remind you of him…whatever!
