What You Don’t Know About This Year’s Spring Fair Performer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JHU chapter.

With Spring Fair rapidly approaching, are you up to speed with this year’s musical guest? Cash Cash, an American EDM group, will be taking the stage on April 27th. Before then, get to know what you’re paying $10 to see; here is a list of some fun facts about the DJs, from dog names to endorsement deals.

  1. Don’t worry, the Spring Fair team got us someone who’s actually famous: Cash Cash is in the top 200 of artists streamed internationally on Spotify.

  2. They’ve got humble origins in Roseland, New Jersey, where brothers Jean Paul and Alex with best friend Samuel all grew up.

  3. Cash Cash’s beginnings started in 2002, when they were all in high school and were called “The Consequence”. Eventually because of liability reasons they had to change their name to “Cash Cash” which member Jean Paul Makhlouf said in an interview was because “everyone is after our cash, and we don’t have any yet.”

  4. Initially, the band leaned more towards making pop music, but about 10 years ago transitioned to electronic dance music.

  5. Their hit “Take Me Home” with Bebe Rexha was featured in the “Finding Dory” trailer, and as a result was ranked #1 in Australia for awhile.

  6. Skrillex is their biggest inspiration in the DJ world since like Cash Cash, Skrillex’s musical origins weren’t in DJing.

  7. In 2017, Cash Cash had an advertising deal with Cup Noodles for the ramen brand’s “Just Warmin’ Up” campaign. Apparently, the DJs have deep emotional ties with Cup Noodles since they lived off of it not long before they got famous.

  8. In a “What’s in Your Purse” interview with The Verge, it was revealed that the DJs are big fans of EmergenC, multivitamin gummies, loofahs, and Nintendo Switches.

  9. The “purse” in this interview is none other than an Ogio backpack, and we all know we made fun of the kids who had these back in middle school. However, it seems as though these are coming back if stylish Cash Cash is sporting them.

  10. Jean Paul, one of the DJs, always wears his grandpa’s ring as a good luck charm and to keep him grounded.

  11. In 2016, Jean Paul was physically assaulted by rapper Tyga’s crew due to an argument between the artists, and suffered a lot of injuries including a concussion and kidney damage. Other Cash Cash Dj Samuel was also affected.

  12. The DJs have Police Benevolent Association (PBA) cards, which basically gets them out of trouble with the law any time they want (the cards say that they have family members in the police force). Whether they actually know people working for law enforcement or not is unclear.

  13. If you’ve got some dank tracks, Cash Cash has a page on their website where you can submit your work. They will listen to and potentially feature your music on their Cash Cash Radio, which plays undiscovered demos every episode.

  14. Jean Paul has a blind dog named Spanky. Apparently before they were full-time musicians, all of the DJs worked at an animal shelter.
