Take a Break: JHU’s Best On-Campus Escapes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JHU chapter.

Between the coughs and sniffles in every intro lecture and the fact that a B-level cubicle is a bit harder to come by as of late, it is obvious that midterm season is in full effect here at Hopkins. Along with the wave of sicknesses and increased groaning and complaining, stress levels are rising, and you are probably in need of a break. It is not always possible to leave campus for an escape, but even a fifteen-minute walk can help calm nerves and refresh the mind. Here’s a list of the best places to break on campus the next time you need an escape:

San Martin Drive Pedestrian Bridge: located at the back of campus, this pathway provides a mini escape into Wyman Park where you can enjoy the bright colors and changing leaves of Fall (it feels like you’re not even on campus!)

Mudd Hall Atrium: two words- rocking chairs

Levering Lounge: has plenty of comfy furniture to catch a quick nap between classes; also, it has free board games, videogames, a pool table, and a ping pong table for student use (fun fact: it’s also open ‘til midnight 7 days a week)!

Gilman Reading Room: another great location to take a nap or to feel very sophisticated by studying in between expensive statues and through the light of fancy stain glass windows.

Keyser Quad: this is a great place to lay out a blanket and sunbathe or grab a lounge chair and simply people watch (if you’re into that kind of thing).

Feel free to try out these spot the next time you need a break from that lab report or midterm paper. More important than the location is that you prioritize taking time to refresh your mind and take care of yourself even on the busiest of days. Good luck on midterms!

I'm a senior at Johns Hopkins University and am studying to become a pediatric occupational therapist. Apart from school, I enjoy running, advocating for minority populations, spending time with my family and friends, and learning new things.
