It’s really not difficult to see why, since her emergence as a national public figure, the First Lady become an incredible inspiration for countless young women and girls including myself: she’s intelligent, funny, charming, beautiful, and so incredibly modest about it all – the very epitome of ‘the total package’.
With the overabundance of reasons as to why she is one of the most admirable women today, you can only imagine how difficult it was to limit my list to just a few. But I managed it and so, without further ado, here they are: the top five reasons why I have a girl crush on Michelle Obama.
1. She’s committed.
Whether its battling childhood obesity or supporting military families, the First Lady is never afraid to dive right into her causes and get to work. Over the last few years, she’s launched several ambitious campaigns – most famously, her healthy eating and living initiative ‘Let’s Move!’ – and makes a point of leading each of the interests they represent by example.
2. She’s unfailingly supportive of the President.
She has stood by her husband throughout his career, defending his decisions, hitting the campaign trail during both elections to rally support, and advocating for his policy priorities. Of course, as much as she champions him and his accomplishments, it should also be noted that…
3. She’s a powerhouse in her own right.
As both a Princeton and Harvard Law grad, Michelle Obama is one of the most educated First Ladies in the history of the presidency – as well as one of the most popular (a recent poll lists her approval rating as 63%). She’s also unafraid to state her opinion,
showing no sign of curbing her legislative activities despite the criticism she has received from some observers during her time in the White House. In fact, the President himself calls her his sounding board and admits to asking her for her input before making major decisions on policy issues.
4. She’s fit, fabulous, and has a closet to die for.
Since ascending to national prominence, the First Lady has become a bona fide fashion icon – and between her sophisticated, consistently flattering style choices (Jason Wu inaugural ball gown anyone?) and those arms, it’s not hard to see why.
5. She’s authentic.
More than anything, though, Mrs. Obama has a way of making it feel as though she just one of us. From her fist bumps and love of French fries to her ability to admit to her imperfections, she is the embodiment of an
influential, yet entirely relatable modern woman.
