Is Valentine’s Day a Scam?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Jefferson chapter.

If you’re anything like me, you’re not falling for another hallmark holiday scam. Sure, the hearts and the chocolates and the roses are a cute façade, but it’s a mere distraction in my opinion. Whether or not you have a significant other, does not mean you can’t tell your friends, family or partner that you love and appreciate them! In true humanistic nature, we look for a reason to celebrate. While I love a good celebration, not everyone wants to part-take in the hype of overpriced gifts and sharing it on social media for the sake of advertising how much you care about someone. This particular holiday is a way for the government to profit billions of dollars in revenue on teddy bears and balloons from greedy corporations. Yet, it is one of the sweetest and widely recognized days to show affection despite the busy work days and commitments we take part in on a day to day basis. Valentine’s Day is a cute sentiment and I give props to all of the couples who celebrate for the sake of celebrating, but it’s just another day for some of us.
