Going to a Concert Alone

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Jefferson chapter.

I have always been an independent person. However, I recently tested my independence and confidence by going to a concert alone. When I found out that one of my favorite bands, Balmorhea, was performing in Philly and tickets were only $12, I was so excited! With no friends very interested in the band, I decided that I would go alone. I was nervous but ultimately had a great time.

Reasons to go to a concert alone:

  1. It is just you and the music at the concert, and you can dance or sing however you want to. Nobody is really paying attention to you, so you can sing your heart out without worry of judgment.
  2. You don’t have to take a friend who isn’t really interested in going. The band I saw was one of my favorites, but none of my friends would’ve enjoyed it as much as I did.
  3. You take up less space! Since it was just me, I was able to get closer to the performers than I would have in a group. Similarly, if you wanted to chill in the back, no one is there to force you to be by people.
  4. You get to arrive and leave whenever you want to! I wanted to see the opening act, but I could have easily come later. No one to answer to except yourself!
  5. You learn a lot about yourself!

Things to remember:

  1. Make sure you have friends who know where you are going. Text family or friends making sure they know you are safe when you leave, get there, and come back.
  2. Enjoying the concert is important, but safety comes first. So, if you feel unsafe, leave ASAP!
  3. Don’t be on your phone the whole time! It’s great to take pictures or videos, but don’t let your phone be a crutch. You will learn so much about yourself without it, and you can even make friends with the people by you!

I am a first-year student at Jefferson University studying Textile Materials Technology. I am originally from a suburb of Chicago, Illinois and now study in Philadelphia. At school, I am on the cross country and track teams, and I sing in the school's choir. I love going thrift shopping, reading, finding cool concerts to go to, and activism!
