Finding Your Style and What it Can Do For You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Jefferson chapter.

There are a lot of “fashion rules” in the world. Some are all about colors and prints, like the rule that pink and red should not be styled together. Other rules are more restrictive and even offensive. There are certain ways that you are told to dress based on your body type. Somehow, sheer has been named a material only thinner people can wear. The gendering of certain clothing items represents an unstated rule. No matter what your shape, you should be able to wear whatever you want. Similarly, gender identity does not dictate the clothing that you choose to wear. Clothing should be a source of self-expression and joy, not frustration and self-loathing.

So, break the rules and wear what you love! Whatever way of dressing makes you feel the most you is what you should wear. Finding your style is one of the most powerful things that you can do for yourself. Feeling comfortable and confident in your outfit can bring you confidence in all aspects of your life. When you are wearing a blazer with some rocking shoulder pads, you know that you can go out and get that internship. Your favorite 80’s inspired look can keep you positive on a stressful day of midterms. Whether you are wearing a sequined bodysuit or the greatest pair of camo pants, dressing how you want can make you a happier, more productive, and more confident person.

If you aren’t sure exactly what style gives you these feelings, don’t be afraid to experiment. Exploring different styles can be expensive, and you may feel that you don’t have the financial ability to dress how you would like. However, there are a lot of cheap options to explore. Thrift shops are one of the best options to not only find cheaper clothing items but more unique pieces as well. Another great option for those trying to look banging on a budget is a clothing swap with your friends.

Another thing that often intimidates people about fashion is trends. They move so quickly that it can be hard to keep up, but the great thing about finding your style is the freedom from trends. Allowing yourself to dress in ways that other people don’t can be a scary thought. Personally, there are some days that I get dressed and love my outfit but am worried what other people will think of it. However, I am always so happy with my choice to dress the way I do. Overcoming the fear of judgment and finding the confidence to go out wearing what you love is endlessly powerful.

I am a first-year student at Jefferson University studying Textile Materials Technology. I am originally from a suburb of Chicago, Illinois and now study in Philadelphia. At school, I am on the cross country and track teams, and I sing in the school's choir. I love going thrift shopping, reading, finding cool concerts to go to, and activism!
