(Contains Spoilers)
After 87 days, the Big Brother houseguests have officially moved out, but only one left with the $750,000 grand prize. The finale aired on October 1st, with Survivor icon Rick Devens, Drew, and Taylor going head-to-head in the final head of household competition. This episode featured all three parts of the final competition, with the winner ultimately choosing who would be the last evicted. The remainder of this article will contain spoilers, so take this as your warning.
With Taylor winning the first part of the competition and Devens winning the second, it came down to them in the final portion. The last part of the competition was memory-based, where the two players had to determine the false statement from various videos of previous houseguests. By a score of 5-3, Devens became the last head of household of the season, and it was up to him to pick between Taylor and Drew for the other seat in the final two. Devens and Drew have been like a father-son duo nearly all season, and they made a final two deal the night before the finale. Taylor had apparently talked Devens out of this deal, leading him to betray Drew and choose him to be the final evicted houseguest, leaving Taylor and Devens as the final two.
Then comes the jury questioning. They always ask roughly the same questions every year—always things about gameplay, big moves, alliances, etc. Personally, my favorite question was Drews. His question was directed to Devens, and he asked, “When did you decide to betray me?”, with which Devens responded by revealing Taylor had come to him and said Devens wouldn’t have the votes if he brought Drew to final two. I think this is a valid argument on her end; however, I do strongly believe Devens would have won no matter who he sat next to. His gameplay was phenomenal all season, and his strategies were all so intelligent. I’ve never seen someone think everything through as thoroughly as he did.
Although I already kind of spoiled it, the jury voting came next. By a vote of 6-1, Devens was crowned the winner of season 28. I do think this was very well deserved. I would have liked to see someone who has never been on reality TV before win, but he really did deserve it. Devens also won $10,000 from the pharaoh’s curse competition, and $50,000 from being voted America’s favorite houseguest, bringing his grand winnings to $810,000. I also would have liked if someone else won America’s favorite houseguest, but I understand why he won. He is incredibly likeable and equally an incredible player. I hope him, Jack, Juju, and his beautiful wife Becca enjoy their prize (this is a reference from the show).
All in all, this season was a huge rollercoaster for me. I have many strong feelings about many houseguests. I stand firm in my opinion that Yash deserved some sort of prize. He was incredible. I wish I could say the same for Drew, but he began to fail me about halfway through. We may never know the Drew-th (another reference). The betrayal from Devens may go down in CBS history. It wasn’t exactly the outcome I was hoping for, but I’m not mad at it. I’m already counting down the days until season 29.
