What Your Graduation Cap Says About You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JCU chapter.

Commencement is upon us, and as we celebrate our Class of 2018 and recognize their success at another commencement ceremony, one of the best parts each year is spotting the various decorated grad caps in the crowd. Here is what your grad cap most likely says about you.

  • Flowers, flowers, and more flowers. You are a free spirit. You spent the last four years learning more about yourself and exploring all that college had to offer. You probably had a tapestry on your dorm’s cinder block wall at some point, and you love to stay up to date on the current hipster trends.
  • School spirit. If your grad cap is centered around your college in some way, then you will be that involved, enthusiastic alumnus who is eager to stay updated on what’s going on at your school even after you’ve moved on. You went to the majority of sporting events and tailgates, and you were probably involved in several student organizations on campus. You may even send your kids there to continue the tradition.
  •  Monogram (with or without a bow). You know what’s coming here: you are preppy. You probably joined in on common style choices such as Lilly Pulitzer and Patagonia. You had a color scheme all planned out for your dorm room before you even started college, and you probably coordinated with your roommate. You may be in a sorority, but either way you have plenty of school spirit and will look back at your time at your university fondly.
  • Major-related. If you choose a design pertaining to what you spent the last few years studying, chances are you were an excellent student who was dedicated to doing well and learning more. You didn’t skip class often, but if you did you probably emailed your professor ahead of time to let him or her know in advance. You were genuinely interested in your major, goal-driven, and you are proud of what you’ve accomplished.
  • Disney theme. You are a kid at heart. You spent your time here making lifelong friends, and you will cherish your memories for years and years to come. You were probably involved on campus and had a leadership role of some sort because you were raised to strive to be the best version of yourself.
  • Pop culture reference or meme. You are a jokester. You were the one who could always make your friends laugh thanks to your brilliant sense of humor. While you may not have been the most tuned-in student when it came to academics, you were someone on campus who could be friends with anyone. You are friendly and charismatic, and you look forward to what the future has to offer.
  • Nothing. You are a minimalist. You are someone who is frank in nature, and you tend to tell it like it is. You believe in getting straight to the point, and you are all set for the next chapter in life; it’s time to get out and get going. Or, you are simply lazy.
