Pros and Cons of LeBron’s Return to Cleveland

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JCU chapter.

The most “Cleveland thing” that could possibly happen to the city of Cleveland happened on Thursday Oct. 30, 2014. The Cavs lost their home-opener. Wait a minute, this wasn’t supposed to happen. Our basketball “god,” LeBron James, has returned to us. How the heck did we lose?! LeBron James has been THE controversial subject of the town ever since he left Cleveland back in July of 2009. It would only make sense that he sparked controversial chats all over again when he announced he was heading back home to good ol’ Cleveland. Alright, so he’s home, now what? It seems like most people don’t know what to think anymore when it comes to LeBron James. Let’s take a look at some of the good and the bad.

Pro #1: Beyonce. LeBron brought Beyonce! The home opener for the Cleveland Cavaliers was one huge shabang. The excitement of LeBron James playing in his first game as a Cleveland Cavalier again was mind-blowing, so mind-blowing that some pretty important people decided to make an appearance that night. The pre-game show featured Kendrick Lamar and Imagine Dragons jamming out for hoards of Cleveland fans outside of the arena. We had Usher sing the National Anthem (insert screams here). Cleveland’s local celebrities, Joe Haden and Johnny Football, came and showed their support as well.

Con #1: Justin Bieber. Enough said. Yup, its true he was there as well. LeBron brought along some unwanted people to the game as well. Unfortunately. On the plus side, when Bieber’s face was on the Jumbotron, he received an enormous “BOO” from the crowd. Way to go Cleveland, way to go!

Pro #2: Money, Money, Money! Think about it, LeBron coming home has been one of the best things in terms of financials for Cleveland. He is raking in the dough for us. Cleveland businesses are benefiting more than we can imagine from LeBron’s return. Goodbye, recession!

Con #2: EVERYTHING is about LeBron. He isn’t the only great thing about Cleveland, c’mon people. For us Clevelanders it seems to be the only topic of conversation. It seems like in every conversation LeBron just sneaks his way into it. New topic please.

Pro #3: Positive Publicity. “Shoot, maybe Cleveland isnt such a bad place after all,” says the rest of the country in unison. It’s about time people start realizing some of the amazing stuff we have here! Maybe now people will stop ragging on Cleveland, this wonderful place we call home.

Con #3: Wait, didn’t he leave us in the first place? LeBron was selfish. He left us and destroyed us.The day he left was basically a mini riot in the town of Cleveland. Does he really deserve our love and trust all over again?

Whether you worship the ground LeBron James walks on or could care less that he has returned, he is here. He is a part of our basketball team which we will loyally stand by until the day we die. As for the beautiful city of Cleveland, I think there are some great things the future has in store for you. Here’s to a wonderful season, Cleveland Cavaliers!
