Lucia Bonacchi, a sophomore at JCU, might be the friendliest student, cook, and coffee connoisseur this campus has ever seen. In the time she is not trying a new seasonal coffee drink or making a delicious meal to help feed the homeless, she is studying Biology.

Year: Sophomore

Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA

Major: Biology with a concentration in neuroscience.

Favorite Food from the Caf: French Fries

Favorite Movie: Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Favorite Book: The Things they Carried

Favorite Color: Yellow

Favorite JCU Memory: Every single part of the Christmas season at John Carroll. I’m already looking forward to the holiday season!

Why did you choose your major?

I’ve had the amazing opportunity to go on several international mission trips,  and a problem I saw too often was the need for healthcare professionals in underdeveloped areas. One specific place, a maternity hospital in Peru, really influenced my career path. I decided to go into the health field to be the change I want to see in the world.

What campus activities are you involved in?

I’m a member of the Eta-Zeta chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma, where I’m the philanthropy chairman; the head chef of the Labre Project, a weekly service project where other JCU students and I drive around Cleveland to give meals and offer friendship to the homeless; Immersion trips, where I most recently traveled to Ecuador for 10 days through John Carroll; Campus Ministry, where I occasionally do readings for daily mass; Carroll Faith Communities, where I’m a group co-leader; Respect for Life; and I work at the Neuroscience Research Lab.

On the rare occasion that you have free time, how do you like to spend it?

I love to draw, watch soap operas from other countries, and do calligraphy. I actually have a mini business selling posters I make using calligraphy.

With all her service-oriented Campus involvement, Lucia has already made a big mark on the JCU campus as a sophomore. She has an exciting two years ahead of her at John Carroll, and a bright future in the medical field after that. If you ever want to get involved in service here on campus, you know who to talk to!
