Gender Roles on Thanksgiving

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JCU chapter.

“Alright, women in the kitchen and boys, go watch the game in the living room but don’t get food on the couches!” That’s typical Turkey Day orders, right? But wait, why should all women be subjected to the kitchen, cooking this amazing and wonderful meal each year, while the young boys learn from the men that its okay to bark at the TV while dinner is being prepared? I’m here to tell you that gender roles should not be a thing, especially on Thanksgiving when everyone in the family should chip in, help, and be thankful.

If you ever come to my house for the Turkey spectacular holiday, you’ll see some help besides just my mom and me and we aren’t a big football-watching family, but most families are. I really don’t think it is right for the women to do all the work, especially dishes because, come on, we all know that is the worst job…

So this Thanksgiving, when you’re home with your family and all the hustle and bustle of getting things together is happening, challenge those roles! Girls, go watch TV and if you don’t like football, change the channel on them! And boys, go help out your mom and grandma because you wouldn’t be here without them! Overall, just think about this when you’re celebrating because all members of the family deserve to have a nice and relaxing evening.
