CLEats: The Best Places to Eat Around JCU

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JCU chapter.

When people talk about the Cleveland revival, they aren’t just talking about the refurbished public square and the newly renovated flats; Cleveland is also in the midst of a foodie renaissance. In fact, the nation is waking up to all the amazing food options that Cleveland has to offer. Luckily, John Carroll is right in the heart of it all, which means we have great restaurants all within short driving distance. Here are just a few of the best places to eat around campus:

Night Town

Where: 12383 Cedar Rd, Cleveland, OH 44106

Distance from Campus: 4.0 miles, 11 min. Drive

Cost: $$$

Night Town is one of my own personal favorite places to eat around Cleveland. This gem of a restaurant is inconspicuous, seemingly hiding in plain sight – and that’s exactly how they want it. See, speak-easy themed Night Town, nestled in the Cedar-Lee intersection is also one of the most popular jazz destinations in the nation. It is a little pricey, but if you are looking for a special date night or a great time with friends, you can’t do much better than enjoying this establishment’s fantastic food while listening to live jazz from some of the best musicians in the world.

Edwin’s Restaurant

Where: 13101 Shaker Square, Cleveland, OH 44120

Distance from Campus: 3.6 miles, 12 min. drive

Cost: $$$

Edwin’s is the gemstone of Shaker Square, with a focus on fine French dining. The restaurant is also a pillar of the community—your food will be prepared and served by formerly incarcerated adults, giving a foundation in the food service and hospitality industry for those looking for a fresh start. The food is consistently delicious and the staff is incredibly friendly. If you have not been, definitely add Edwin’s to your list!

Tabletop Board Game Café

Where: Ohio City; 1810 W 25th St, Cleveland, OH 44113

Distance from Campus: 10.0 miles, 27 min. drive

Cost: $

Ohio City is one of the premier neighborhoods in Cleveland, being home to West Side Market, great night life, and some of the most unique eateries in the city. If you go, be sure to make a stop at the Table Top Café to browse its selection of hundreds of board games for all ages and group sizes before sitting down to enjoy a coffee and a bite to eat while playing the game of your choice. Overwhelmed by the choices? The friendly and passionate staff will be sure to help you find the game that suits your tastes.

Gigi’s on Fairmount

Where: 3477 Fairmount Blvd, Cleveland Heights, OH 44118

Distance from Campus: 1.2 miles, 4 min. drive

Cost: $$

If you are looking for quality food within walking distance from campus, Gigi’s has you covered. With delicious cuisine and a lovely, relaxing atmosphere, Gigi’s will leave you satisfied every time.

Sushi 86

Where: 509 Prospect Ave E, Cleveland, OH 44114

Distance from Campus: 8.8 miles, 24 min. drive

Cost: $

Exploring all that downtown Cleveland has to offer is a favorite pastime of many a JCU student, but it can be difficult to find a spot to eat that works with the college budget. Sushi 86 has incredible sushi for a great price. With a great atmosphere, affordable food, and an exciting location, you would be remiss to pass up Sushi 86! P.S. Try the miso soup – its delish!
