The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum is located in Weston, West Virginia. This asylum is one of the most haunted spots in West Virginia. Originally known as Weston State Hospital, it was constructed in the 1800’s and put to a halt in 1858 due to Union Soldiers wanting the land. During the working years the hospital was filled with many mentally ill patients.  A mentally ill man named Thomas Story Kirkbirde created the facility. He wanted to create a place where patients could have freedom to roam the facility. The facility housed 250 people in individual rooms. In 1863 living conditions began to fall rapidly. The hospital began to be overrun by over 500 patients, including those with severe mental illnesses. Patients began to be crammed together, 4-5 patients per room. The hospital couldn’t keep up with patient health and they were running wild.  Food supplies were also depleting. The worst came in the 1960s when the hospital housed 2600 patients. These patients were living in rooms with no heat or furniture. The rooms where infested with mold with the walls peeling from decay. Stories of the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum are located on their website.
