How to Get a Hella Good Lip Look in Ten Steps or Less

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at IUP chapter.

Fall is approaching, my lovelies. As a self-proclaimed makeup addict, this means brown eye shadow, defined brows, and vampy lips. I did not know until fairly recently what the most effective way was to weather the elements and hamburgers alike while keeping your painted kisser selfie-worthy. You might be in the same boat and cannot keep your red to last past your 10:10. Hopefully, these tips can aid my lipped people out there who are as lost as I was! While I wholeheartedly recommend rocking a dark lipstick look and will hereby spend the entirety of fall wearing a plum pout, these tips should work for any and all lip colors.  Enjoy, my lipstick-wearing babes!

           I.     Exfoliate!

A step often overlooked, exfoliation is key to getting a velvety lip look. By sloughing away the dead skin, you eliminate flakes and reveal the fresh skin beneath, creating a smooth base for color. You can easily make your own lip scrub with Vaseline and sugar or buy a lip scrub if you’re feeling fancy. If you’re very cheap (like me), you can simply use a wet toothbrush and gently scrub the skin away. Be careful! You don’t want to scrape the delicate area too much.

         II.     Primer (or Chapstick)!

As with all makeup, if you want long-lasting looks, look into primer. Lipstick is no different. Primer can moisturize your lippies and assist in giving the color something to stick to, in addition to keeping the color where you want it. Chapstick can do a good job with this as well, if you want something that can do double duty.

       III.     Lip-liner!

Do you want your NYX soft matte lip cream to make its way downtown onto your chin? Of course not! Lip-liner can help your color stay put. Since no one has the space or money for four thousand liners, I recommend investing in a clear or invisible liner. That way, it always matches!

       IV.     Lip color!

What formula, brand, and method you use all depends on your personal preference. I commend defining that Cupid’s Bow for a pretty pout, as well as taking care not to over-do the corners of your mouth. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, however, and we all have our different aesthetic favorites. Do what makes you happy, my bold-lipped friends.

         V.     BLOT!

The KEY to a long-lasting lip look. By removing excess product, you reduce gloppiness and can build intensity much more effectively. Kiss a tissue or kiss a friend, but get that goop off somehow.

       VI.     More lip color!

Do the same thing you did to put it on before. Super simple stuff.

     VII.     Blot again!

Find another friend to kiss.

   VIII.     SET!

By using a translucent powder, you set the lip and guarantee staying power. I take a single-ply tissue and, placing over my lips, dust powder over them using a fluffy foundation brush. This way, the brush doesn’t ruin all the hard work you put into this look but your lipstick is still set.

IX.     Spend the rest of the day as a fierce-faced minx!

Do I really have to remind you how to do that?
