How do you make IUP your own? Writing Contest Winner Announced!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at IUP chapter.

Her Campus IUP would like to congratulate collegiette Renee Irwin on winning our “How do you make IUP your own?” Homecoming Writing Contest!

Renne’s sumbission shows just how unique of a woman she is and how she showcases this as a student at IUP! Check it out!

Sitting in the oak grove, you will see numerous college students walking from class to class. I’d like to think that I’m not just another student. A friendly smile, a unique style… I am discovering day to day who I really am here. I make IUP my own by creating picture perfect memories that will last a life time. I have opened up and become a new person. Spending my nights adventuring, I make sure that my life here consists of equal work and equal play.

Coming from a small, narrow-minded town, I have been so used to the same, monotonous routine my whole life; the same people, the same places. I have made IUP a fresh start. Not only do I love exploring the new scenery, I also enjoy experiencing new people. I am learning new cultures, attempting a new language (but still… no hablo espanol), and appreciating what makes everyone different.

I can finally be myself here. IUP is full of firsts. Living on my own for the first time, allowing people to view my writing for the first time, and loving who I am for the first time, I have become a new person on this campus. I am a proud Crimson Hawk, and I have earned my wings. IUP is allowing me to fly. I am proving people wrong and learning new things about myself. College is a learning experience, and I am loving every step.

Knowing that my time here won’t last forever, I am enjoying every day to the fullest. College is supposed to consist of the best years of your life, and I’d like to think that I’m doing the best I can to make sure of this. IUP: my college, my home, my life.

Thank you, Renee!

Check back in next week for the second place submission!

I am currently an English Education student with a Spanish minor at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania.  I work as a Community Assistant in one of the residence halls and volunteer as a tutor for students learning English as a second language.  My dream job is that of a secondary bilingual education teacher.  Some of my favorite past times include watching movies, drinking coffee, reading, and hanging out with my friends here at IUP.I am also the president of Her Campus IUP.  The opportunity to work with the talented writers, photographers, and designers that I do makes the position enjoyable and rewarding.  We work as a team to bring readers the best possible articles and events.
