Let’s talk about the “chill girl.” You know, the girl who never complains, never asks too many questions, and acts like nothing bothers her. He takes six hours to text back? No problem. He doesn’t make plans? It’s fine. He doesn’t know what he wants? She’s just going with the flow. But let’s be serious for a second. Since when did having feelings become something we needed to hide? Somewhere along the way, girls started believing that being unbothered was the key to keeping someone’s attention.
The problem with being the chill girl is that half the time, you’re not even chill. You’re just pretending. You might want reassurance, consistency, or a little more effort, but instead of saying something, you convince yourself that you’re asking for too much. You don’t want to be labeled as needy or dramatic, so you stay quiet. Meanwhile, you’re overthinking every little thing while telling your friends, “Girl, I don’t even care.” Yes, you do, and that’s okay!
Social media definitely hasn’t made things any better. We’re constantly seeing advice telling women to never text first, never show too much interest, and always let a man chase them. Dating has practically turned into a competition over who can care the least. But why does showing genuine interest automatically mean you’re losing? Relationships shouldn’t feel like a game where the person who acts the most emotionally unavailable wins.
There’s also a difference between being understanding and allowing someone to do whatever they want. Being laid-back doesn’t mean accepting the bare minimum or ignoring your own boundaries. You can be a fun, easygoing person and still expect communication, respect, and effort. Having standards doesn’t make you difficult, and expressing your feelings doesn’t automatically make you insecure. The right person shouldn’t make you feel like you have to silence yourself just to keep them around.
At the end of the day, being the chill girl is only cute when you’re actually chill. If something bothers you, speak up. If you want more effort, say that. And if someone makes you feel like having basic expectations is asking for the world, maybe they’re not the person for you. Dating is already complicated enough without pretending to be someone you’re not. So please, retire the “I’m cool with whatever” act if you’re really not.
