5 Things to Remember About Being Involved

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at IUP chapter.

College is a wonderful place full of countless opportunities. When you’re a freshman, everything looks appealing and you want to join as much as you can. And why shouldn’t you? You’re here to build your resume and network so that you can have a job once you leave. However, there are a few things to remember when it comes to getting involved on campus.

1. Academics come first.

This should go without saying,  but you are at college to get an education. If you’re balancing three clubs, a social life, a full course load, and a job—there’s a very good chance your academics will suffer. Make sure that when you’re looking to get involved that your academics stay your #1 priority because the ultimate goal is to leave college with a degree.

2. You cannot do everything.

There are so many clubs and organizations that it is completely unrealistic to think that you can do everything. If all of your friends are joining a club that meets on the same day as another club you’re interested in—join the club you’re interested in! Don’t half devote yourself to two clubs when one fascinates you and another you only go to because your friends are there. It’s okay to branch out from your friends because you’ll connect with others.

3. You need sleep.

Getting involved is great; however, you may not want to hold positions on every executive board of every organization you join. Balancing so many different titles can be exhausting, so when looking to get involved don’t be afraid to just be a general member. There will be opportunities to hold executive positions, but don’t do it at the expense of your sleep schedule.

4. Prioritize your life.

If you’re someone who wants to do as much as possible, remember to prioritize your life. Planners are a great way to stay on top of things! We here at Her Campus IUP, highly recommend Erin Condren planners. Use your planner to create to-do lists, remember assignments and appointments, and just to keep yourself organized.

5. Don’t be afraid of changing interests.

When you’re in college, your interests will change. Something that you may have once loved might not excite you anymore and that’s okay! If you find your interests changing, don’t be afraid to explore new things that do interest you!
