If you’re like me, then you love reading about things that are considered “strange.” Books that are typically psychologically based or call out humanity for its flaws are my favorites! Below, I have listed five books that I have read that I highly recommend for others looking for books that match this description!

  • Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield- About the life of a couple after one returns from a sea expedition. Has themes of grief, love, and homophobia.
  • A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers- An “autobiography” written by a former food critic after she gets sent to prison for murdering and eating her lover. Has themes of obsession and cannibalism.
  • They Never Learn by Layne Fargo- Details two women who are at the same college, one a student and one a professor, who both have vengeful thoughts towards men who hurt others. Has themes of assault, revenge, and love.
  • Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado- Short stories, each about a woman experiencing the world in different ways. Has themes of horror, love, abuse, and misogyny.
  • Bunny by Mona Awad- About a college senior who gets swept up in the strange after-school activities of a sorority. Has themes of the occult and friendship.

So, if you’re in the mood for something that might be a bit disturbing, but thought-provoking, then I highly recommend checking out these books! I will mention that each book has a trigger of its own, so please be sure to check for those before checking them out. Happy reading!
