Valentine’s Day is that one super romantic day of the year to show that special someone you truly care. It’s about flowers and chocolates and gushy love letters. Love fills the air. Every girl (and okay maybe guy) deserves to be showered with love and affection on this day. Unfortunately, not everyone can have that perfect dreamy Valentine’s Day. Sometimes, your perfect V-Day might take a turn for the worse. But hey, it makes a good story right?

“One Valentine’s Day I thought I was going on a date with my guy friend so I got all dressed up and waited for my friend to pick me up. When he finally showed up, ‘his bud’ was with him sitting in the front seat. What I thought was going to be a date turned out to be a trip to Sports Authority.”—Anonymous

“During my Junior year of high school, my girlfriend and I at the time weren’t allowed to talk to each other. Our parents did not agree with our relationship. Well, like many young loves, we didn’t care. We had been talking for a long while anyway and never gave up on our relationship. So it was Valentine’s Day and everything was going right. We were doing our normal daily texting which was all we could really sneak by our parents. Well on that day her mom decides to go through her phone. She finds EVERY text we had sent for the past couple of months. Man, it was a HORRIBLE Valentine’s Day after that. Of course her mom called my mom and both of our worlds ended that night (metaphorically).”—Alex Kimbrell, Freshman at Indiana University

“One V-day I went on a date with this boy, Jacob. I wasn’t particularly interested in him, but I decided to go anyways. He took me to IHOP really late at night. We were there for what seemed like forever. He literally would not stop talking the entire night. He just talked and talked and talked. It was awkward as hell. One of the conversations we had during the date was about my best guy friend, Andy. When asked about our relationship, I told Jacob that Andy and I were just friends. Finally, he drove me to where my car was parked close by. When we got to the car, Andy had written “Will you go to prom with me?” all over the car! Andy and I had been talking about going together, but nothing had been official yet. I had no idea that he would even ask, especially like this! Before I could give it a second look, Jacob grabed an ice scraper and scraped the entire message off of the car. A few days after the date, Jacob told me he wanted a relationship with me. Not knowing how to respond, I told him that I was going off to college soon and wasn’t interested. Worst date ever. I now absolutely hate going on any type on date.”—Anonymous at Indiana University

“My mom works in a hair salon and is constantly on her feet. So for Valentine’s Day one year, thinking he was being helpful, my dad got her feet inserters from the Good Feet Store as a gift. My mom did not seem to find this gift as endearing as he did. She was pissed that on one of the most romantic days of the year, all her husband could think about was her feet.”—Anonymous at Indiana University

“My boyfriend at the time was in the Bahamas during Valentine’s Day one year. When he came back I got him a gift certificate to a nice Italian restaurant in Boston’s north end so that we could go together. My gift? Turns out he cheated on me while he was in the Bahamas.”—Anonymous at University of Pittsburgh

“In first grade, I really liked this kid named Ryan. For whatever reason, I’ve never been shy about approaching guys as long as I just get myself to hunker down and do it. So I made a special Valentine’s Day card to give to him when the class did all the valentine exchanges. On his card, I wrote on it telling him that I liked him. He read it and said “Ew!” and went and showed all his friends. They laughed at me. All throughout high school, many years later, we had a lot of mutual friends. But from that day on, we never really talked again. It’s okay though, because years later I went on to date his best friend.”—Erin Shaw, Sophomore at Indiana University

“I took a girl one year to a monster truck rally because I completely forgot it was Valentine’s Day. On the plus side, she ended up thinking it was a pretty fun date.”—Sophomore at Indiana University

“In first grade, I had the biggest crush on a girl in my class, I’m pretty sure it was true love. When Valentine’s Day came around I had made a special card and picked out extra candy just for her. When it came time to for our class to exchange valentines I quickly dropped mine off at her desk and then gave my other classmates their cheesy cards. I got back to my desk and realized I didn’t get one from her, the love of my 1st grade life. My heart was broken. When I got home my grandparents where there, planning to go out to dinner with my parents. When my grandma asked about my valentines day and I immediately began crying. Because I was so hurt, my grandma decided to call this girl’s parents and tell them of my situation. This embarrassed me to no end. I hid in my room until the next day and considered not even going to school out of embarrassment. But when I got there I found a card and candy from her on and life went on.”—Jared Reilly, Freshman at Indiana University

Hopefully your Valentine’s Day wasn’t “horror story” worthy. HCXO!
