Tensions Between The U.S. and North Korea Grow

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ithaca chapter.

While tensions between North Korea and the United States have always been prevalent, there was no imminent worry that the leaders might attack one other, until now.

President Trump escalated matters not just by imposing sanctions banning the United States from trading with North Korea, but by deciding to engage Kim Jong Un in a war of words due to the ongoing missile testing ordered by the North Korean dictator.

It all started back in July when Trump fired a couple tweets at Kim Jung Un that said, “Does President Kim have nothing better to do with his life, perhaps China will put a heavy move on North Korea and end this nonsense once and for all.” This suggests that the entire country should be obliterated. He wasn’t even bothering to suggest that the United States try to help bring down their leader in a less violent way. Yes, while we know Kim isn’t the nicest guy, but as a President, you have to be careful about what you say. Kim fired back in response that despite being so far across the see he could still launch missiles enough to take out the US territory of Guam, which worried Trump and caused him to retort by calling Kim “Rocket Man,” a demeaning name for someone who’s obsessed with launching hydrogen missiles.

What one can hope for is that this war of the words will end soon and the threat of a possible nuclear war can be withdrawn.
