Miles Apart, Close at Heart: Valentine’s Day for the Long Distance Relationship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ithaca chapter.

“Not with me

but he’ll kiss me

some Valentine’s Day!”

Valentine’s Day is a well-feared holiday for some college students. For many, it’s an awkward day full of eating too much sugar and feeling pitiful. No matter whether you’re a single lady, in the honeymoon phase of a new relationship or feeling like an old married couple, Valentine’s Day can still be full of fun and love.

From years of personal experience, I totally feel that pain of long distance relationships. The random texts throughout the day and the occasional call or Facetime are never enough. It’s frustrating not being able to see your significant someone during the one day dedicated to love. This obviously isn’t the best combination and can really get you wondering whether being in a long distance relationship is the right choice.

Fear not ladies! Whether you’re three hours away from your honey or a flight across the country, Valentine’s Day can be rekindled with a few simple ideas:

1. Send a Care Package:

Send some sweet treats, a few of your favorite photos together and a cute personal note. This is sure to make him smile and feel the love. It won’t break the bank and helps reassure that you two are meant to be, even miles apart.

2. Make “Open When” Cards:

Handmade cards for your love to open when they are sad, needing motivation or just missing you are a great personal gift. They’re handwritten which helps them feel a little more special than a quick text. It’s a great way to cheer both of you up with some positive vibes.

3) Skype Dinner Date:

Make a plan with your sweetheart to have dinner together! Well, through a webcam that is…Skype through the meal prep and dinner and it will feel like you’re having a romantic date in your own kitchen.

4) Take a Rain Check:

No one says you have to celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14. Make a date to celebrate on your own time when the two of you will be together again. This way it won’t feel like you’re missing out on that special day and it will take some pressure off trying to make a long distance Valentine’s Day run smoothly.

Remember ladies, love is all around you so celebrate no matter who you’re with and stay positive through this awkward holiday.
