Lizzo’s “Cuz I Love You (Super Deluxe)” RANKED!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ithaca chapter.

In honor of our queen Lizzo winning THREE grammys this year, I decided to make a fun ranking of “Cuz I Love You (Super Deluxe)”! A truly incredible amount of Lizzo’s music is fantastic, so this was a difficult task. However, this is the conclusion I came to. Feel free to agree or disagree, and either way, go listen to it some more!

Juice

In my humble opinion, this is Lizzo at her best. Juice has one of the best, danceable grooves I’ve ever heard and it NEVER. GETS. OLD. Every aspect of this song is perfection! *chefs kiss*

Good as Hell

Good As Hell is the most confidence-inspiring bop of the album. The genius is it accomplishes that within a cool and collected groove that lives in your body as you hear it. “Baby how you feelin, feelin good as hell!” is probably my favorite mantra of Lizzo’s thus far. Straightforward. To the point. Brilliant.

Cuz I Love You

The title track of this album simply slaps. The DAAAA DA DA DA DAAAA DA DA DA DAAAA of the horns is epic. It’s soulful and relatable. When you blast this one in your headphones, your roommate will ask you what’s wrong because the stank face necessary to fully get into it looks alarming. Not speaking from experience or anything.

Water Me

This song deserves better than a walmart commercial! The most underrated bop on the album. The bass line is fantastic, with every new sound building on the last. And the lyrics are a metaphor of inspiration. Get into this one, people!

Truth Hurts

I know you’re probably mad at me for not ranking this one higher. It’s become an iconic feminist anthem, and there is no denying its power. My justification is that the soundscape of this song isn’t as much my personal taste as the ones ranked above it. But believe me, I’m screaming all the words with you whenever it plays!

Like a Girl

An even more overt feminist anthem than Truth Hurts! This song is so much fun! Also, “Only exes that I care about are in my f***ing chromosomes” is an amazing lyric.

Lingerie

THIS song is the sexiest on the album! The slow electric guitar intro to start it off, the perfectly timed build, and the breathy vocals at the end? More people should be aware of Lingerie.

Crybaby

The vocals and soundscape of this one are so cool and unique! It loses a few points for not having that “put it on repeat forever” quality in so many of her other songs.

Jerome

Oh, Jerome. This a great power ballad. The backup vocals elevate it to something a little different at the end. It might’ve been ranked higher, but I honestly just feel bad for Jerome the whole time I’m listening to it.

Heaven Help Me

This is a really interesting song. It gets points for lyrics and the flute at the end. However, there’s a really sudden transition in tempo and overall sound in the middle that feels a little too disjointed to me.

Better in Color

My favorite thing about this song is that it rejects the pervasive and harmful “we should all be colorblind” discourse, but that’s a topic for another article! The amazing thing about this album is that I still really like a lot of the songs that are ranked lower! I just like others more.

Exactly How I Feel (feat. Gucci Mane)

This song is kind of meh. It doesn’t do anything that another one of her songs doesn’t do better. And Lizzo, honey, you don’t need Gucci Mane!

Soulmate

This song has a good beat, but I find the lyrics and the soundscape a little lacking. Also when she repeats “love” and “one” I find it a bit annoying. But I love the concept of being your own soulmate! That’s a really boss mentality to have.

Boys

I might get some hate for this opinion. But this song really isn’t that exciting to me.

Tempo (feat. Missy Elliot)

Aaaand we reach the end of the list. This is the only song on the album that I actively dislike. No offense to you if you vibe with it! It’s just not my taste.
