Times;mso-bidi-font-family:”Times New Roman””>You all know that IC More Than Me is that club on campus that passes around the meal sign away sheets, but it’s so much more than just that. It is the first ever college branch of the international nonprofit organization More Than Me, which aims to get the girls of Liberia, West Africa, off of the streets and into schools. The money that is raised through the meal sign aways and the other MTM fundraisers goes directly to funding the girls’ education, uniforms, school supplies, and lunch; it’s really cool to see how much of an impact our fundraising has had this past year.
Times;mso-bidi-font-family:”Times New Roman””>I always look forward to going to MTM meetings. Every Monday at 8:30 p.m., the MTM E-board and members eagerly share thoughts on how to raise money for the girls and how to have fun doing so. It’s also really exciting to hear Grace, the president of our More Than Me chapter, talk about her experiences in Liberia with some of our students. All of the members of the club are really enthusiastic about helping the cause, and it is so awesome to see how that enthusiasm fills the room. It ‘s also really rewarding to be a part of a group that comes together to help other people.
Times;mso-bidi-font-family:”Times New Roman””>Joining More Than Me was definitely one of the best decisions I made this year. One of the reasons I love being a part of this organization is that it really puts things in perspective. One of those things is that there are so many people in the world who aren’t as fortunate as we are. While this is something we know, it can be easy to forget when we have a lot of homework or a busy day, so I know that I appreciate the reminder that my “first world problems” really don’t compare to the problems that these girls and other people in poorer countries face on a daily basis. Another message from MTM that has stuck with me is to “get over yourself.” This is a really good point because if we don’t put ourselves out there, regardless of how we feel or will be perceived, then how are we going to help those who need us?
Times;mso-bidi-font-family:”Times New Roman””>IC More Than Me really loves getting new members! If you would like to join, just come to a meeting! They are held every Monday at 8:30 p.m. in Friends 201. If you would like more information, check out the IC MTM website.
