If you’re like me, and you don’t know which players are which, which team is better than the other, or when to cheer or boo, this article is for you.

Does your squad like to watch football on Sundays? And because you have nothing else to do on a Sunday (besides the homework you’re putting off), you sit down with them? Sunday football can be fun to watch, and it can also be a fun opportunity to hang out with your friends and eat chips and salsa. Your friends might not always converse with you while the TV is on (unless it’s about football), but here are some of our best tips and tricks to actually enjoying yourself during a football game.

1. Learn the basics

Learning the basics can help you better enjoy the game. If you have no idea of what’s going on, you are more likely to complain because you’re bored and confused. It’s fun to be present during the game so you can dramatically cheer or boo with your friends. In high school, I went to a few games with my best friend and I asked her about pretty much everything. It helped, and I got more into watching football.

2. Don’t be afraid to ask questions

I asked my friend, a football expert, if this tip would work. They said they would rather have their friend ask questions to understand what is going on than to sit there and complain. Believe it or not, football fans hear you when you talk to them during a game. However, they may not answer your question until the commercials.

3. Enjoy the food and the drinks

With any game day comes good food and drinks. If you love to cook or bake, volunteer your skills. That could get you a little more excited for the game. If that’s not something you’re into, then simply enjoy what’s on the coffee table in front of you. It usually involves chips and salsa, mozzarella sticks, potato skins, pigs in a blanket or even a full cookout. Feel free to bring your own snacks if the food is not to your liking. If you’re of age, making fun alcoholic beverages with friends can be a nice thing to have during the game as well.

4. Choose a team

I’m from Massachusetts, so I always cheer on the Patriots when they play, even if I’m not a hardcore football fan. You could do that with the team from your area, if they’re playing, or just choose a random team. Either way, find out who your friends are rooting for, and choose to cheer with them or go head to head with them. Maybe even place a bet!

5. Wear a jersey

If you have one, wear it! It’ll get you more into the spirit of the game. If not, you can ask a friend to borrow theirs. You could get all of your friends together and purchase jerseys. It could be fun, and you could get a great photo op out of it!

6. Relax

Take a deep breath and relax. Sunday football is just a nice opportunity to bond with your friends. It’s also fall, so enjoy the changing leaves, the cooler temperature, and of course, some football.
