I am a firm believer in Karma. And, obviously, I want it on my side. I know there are the skeptics and the cynics who say that Karma is a conceptualized force based on nothing more than coincidence, and I am ok with agreeing to disagree. Whether you believe in Karma or not, it doesn’t hurt to pay it forward and rack up some positive supernatural forces that may just help you out one day. I call these “Good Karma Builders.”
1. Carry a Lucky Charm: Karma, luck. Luck, karma. Synonymous? Who am I to say, but popping a rabbit’s foot in your pocket or throwing on those lucky underwear gives you, if anything, a little extra confidence. And we all know that feeling lucky feels good.
2. Avoid Road Rage: Highway traffic is one of the main reasons why I don’t doubt the powers of Karma! Admit it, we’ve all been “that guy” on the road who has accidentally cut someone off or forgot to double-check our blind spot. After every avoided accident, count your lucky stars because the Karma gods were, at that moment, remembering the time you let some one cut in front of you or have the right of way. Stay calm behind the wheel and reap its reward.
3. Be Honest: This may sound a bit cliché, but unless you want a bunch of lies to start coming your way, tell the truth. What goes around comes around, and lies aren’t worth the drama.
4. Apologize: I like to look at apologies as Bad Karma erasers. Maybe it slipped your mind that Karma never stops keeping track of your good or bad deeds, but don’t fret! Right your wrongs and turn that Bad Karma into some good.
5. Make Someone’s Day: The tiniest actions are usually the ones that have the most impact on someone’s attitude. It doesn’t take much to send a sweet text, to smile in passing, to say “I can’t wait to see you.” It can make someone’s day a bit brighter and set off a chain reaction of good will and cheerfulness. Who doesn’t want to be the cause of that?
6. Be Patient: With this, I struggle. I am impatient, I get antsy, and then I get testy, but, I am working on it. I know that people have schedule conflicts, jobs, commitments, and plans that little old me has no right to barge in on. So instead of the evil eye-rolls, I try to take a breath, relax, and realize that it is worth the wait.
7. Trust Your Gut: Plain and simple. If it feels wrong, don’t do it. Regret is one of the worst feelings to experience, so avoid it at all costs, and you’ll stay in the Karma-clear
8. Believe in Your Decisions: Like regret, doubt is equally as horrible. Whatever path you’ve chosen, have a little faith. Make decisions with outcomes you can be proud of. When you start something, see it through and enjoy its success.
9. Be Charitable: Your stress about your Chemistry test or minor freak out at a friend takes on a new perspective when you look at the world around you. Donate to your favorite charity or sign up for a walk to support a cause you believe in. It will give you that I-just-made-a-difference feeling and good Karma will once again smile upon you.
10. Share: We should all be pretty familiar with this one by now, since it was lesson number oOne in Kindergarten, but a little reminder never hurt. However, at this point in our lives, sharing doesn’t apply to the best colors in the crayon carton, the softest Play dough, and the Lego castle. Now, we must be generous with our friendship, our ideas, and our triumphs. Share, and watch Karma share right back.Â
