This article is going to contain spoilers for Netflix’s, Something Very Bad is Going to Happen.
So what is the bad thing?
This is the question everyone had going into this show. I felt a pit in my stomach waiting for the reveal. In the end, I felt like there wasn’t one “bad thing.” It came down to really terrible sequence of events, beginning with Rachel, the main character, learning that her family is cursed and that she will die if she doesn’t marry her soulmate. Nicky, her fiancĂ©, then enacts the curse by stopping the wedding, ultimately changing Rachel’s mind about him being her soulmate. Additionally, Rachel does in fact die and then takes the place of the witness for those bearing the same curse eternally. Broadly, I interpreted the “bad thing” being Rachel overcoming her fear of dying, only to be denied by Nicky and dying to the curse anyways.
my thoughts
I thoroughly enjoyed Something Very Bad is Going to Happen! The horror spin on a love story was very entertaining, but the first few episodes were quite slow. After finishing the show, I realized that those episodes were crucial to the storyline but I was a little bored. As the show progressed, I was really hooked on Rachel’s attempt to figure out the curse. I thought that the side plots were engaging and each character added to the unsettling nature to the show. The more that was revealed simultaneously created more confusion and revealed secrets of each character, which I loved. One of my favorite storylines was Jules’s character arc. I had a love-hate relationship with him. At first, he was very off-putting and I felt like he was trying to ruin Rachel and Nicky’s wedding, but once we learned about the sorry man and his willingness to help Rachel, I couldn’t help but root for him. Also, I could be alone on this, but I felt like there could have been a universe in which Rachel and Jules were soulmates. Jules meeting Rachel was fate, and there was tension there.
my favorite parts
One of my favorite things about this show was the moody, dark theme that was set from the beginning. Every minute detail had a symbolic meaning. I loved the coloring of the show, the setting of the secluded cabin and the soundtrack. I’ve become obsessed with the final needle-drop of the show, “We Will Not be Lovers,” by The WaterBoys, which plays while Rachel is driving away from the Cunningham home. It felt representative of Rachel’s entire experience of her cursed marriage and her tragic fate. I also enjoyed the reveal of who the soulmates were after the curse was enacted. I was shocked, but not surprised that Jules and Nell were in fact soulmates. I felt a deep sense of hatred for Nicky being kept alive, but I also thought that it was inevitable. Nicky’s decisions in the final episode were so disappointing, but I think that he truly thought Rachel was his soulmate. Camila Morrone’s performance as Rachel was outstanding, and I really watched the show for her!
verdict
My rating for Something Very Bad is Going to Happen is a 7/10! I would recommend watching if you’re a fan of horror and a dramatic, thrilling plot! It really brings into question, do soulmates exist?
