On September 16, Redbull Sound Select brought upcoming artists Sza Lizzo and Povi to Champaign! We had the opportunity to speak with Povi and get her advice for college women aspiring to success like herself!
Her Campus: How did you get your start in the music industry?
Povi: I’ve ways been a singer, but a very shy one at that. When I picked up and moved to Oakland, that’s when I began working with live musicians and attending these crazy open jam nights called ‘The People’s Jam’ that completely broke me out of my shell. Because I realized it wasn’t about me..it was about the mutual love we all share for music.
HC: If you could collaborate with any other music artist, who would it be?
Povi: That’s a tough one because it’s often changing, but off top my dream team would be Janet Jackson and or JCole.
HC: Do any women serve as a role model or an inspiration to you? If so, who?
Povi: Absolutely, a lot of women right now are killing it. One woman that stood out to me when I was younger was Dessa of Doomtree. I am such a fan girl for her, her lyrics and ability to sing and rap just blow me alway. Another huge inspiration is Janelle Monae, her movement is so pure and well rounded. Besides her voice being flawless, I love that she speaks out on social issues and starts true to her core values.
HC: Do you have any advice for college women?
Povi: Stay focused and true to yourself and your ambitions. Don’t compare yourself to anyone, appreciate your flaws. All these things can be easier said than done, but the more you treat yourself with respect the easier it will come. Life is too short to waste it on the things that distract your from your destiny, and it’s too long to dwell in old habits. Excersize your body mind and soul ladies!
HC: Is there anything else you want us to know?
Povi: I guess that you can never judge a book by its cover. I’m just a regular girl, and am working to be better everyday. But there are ups and downs to every life. This coming November I’ll be releasing my EP and I’m really excited about sharing it. It’s all pretty personal. I know I’m not the only one who goes through break up and loss so I hope that other people will find comfort and healing in the music like I did.
