As I’ve made the transition back onto campus, I’ve been reminded of all the reasons why I chose to attend the one and only, U of I. From sitting on the Quad people-watching to hearing the Marching Illini practice as I walk to class, I’m easily reminded each second of my “why”.
Coming from a small town and an even smaller school-with a graduating class of 36-, transitioning to the big-school atmosphere was definitely scary at first. But, as I reflect on my freshman year here at U of I, I don’t know how I was ever without it. For starters, Quad Day was truly eye-opening. I mean, a cheese club? I could’ve never imagined attending a school that had so many opportunities to really find your niche.
That’s what I think I love about U of I. There’s truly a place for everyone of every background here. Whether it’s sports, music, Greek life, professional clubs, or karaoke in the Union, there’s always been something for everyone. Coming from a school where I knew everything about everyone and didn’t even have a football team, it’s refreshing to come here and see the many diverse opportunities U of I offers.
Outside of it’s opportunities, I also knew I wanted to attend a school that pushed me outside of my comfort zone. With an enrollment of over 60,000 students, I knew this meant I had to put myself out there to expose myself to new people, organizations, and overall be comfortable with doing things independently. While it definitely was intimidating as a freshman, looking back, it’s one of the most rewarding parts of my freshman year.
Eventually, as I continue to grow as not only a student but a person here, the campus starts to feel a bit smaller, and even more like home. I no longer needed my Apple Maps to get to class, the Armory layout finally started to make sense(I think), but most importantly, the places I was once unfamiliar with are now filled with memories of the years I’ll never forget.
Looking back, I don’t think I chose U of I with the knowledge of what my college experience would look like, but rather what I could make of it. U of I has brought me so many opportunities, people, and memories that I could never replace, and a rewarding experience of trying something new.
Now, starting my sophomore year, I’m appreciating every little moment even more. The sound of the Marching Illini, the football games, all of the fun on the Quad, late nights with friends, and even the hot walks to my classes.
That’s exactly how every day I’m reminded of my “why” here at U of I. In this big school, I somehow found a place that I can call home for the rest of my life.
