Music Blog: Rihanna’s ‘Talk That Talk’

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Released in late November of 2011, Rihanna’s latest album Talk that Talk has fueled airwaves with hit songs like “We Found Love” and most recently, “You Da One.”

If you haven’t taken the opportunity to listen to RiRi’s entire new album, I encourage you to do so. On her latest album, Rihanna incorporates everything from hip-hop, house, and dubstep, making it one of the best albums so far in her career. But what makes it the best? It isn’t just songs like “We Found Love,” “You Da One,” or even “Talk that Talk,” it’s the entire collection of songs that make this album well rounded and loved no matter what kind of music you like.

Say you’re feeling a little down because you’re far from the one you love, then listen to “Do Ya Thang.” It’s my personal favorite song on the album, and it hints at the speculation that Rihanna and Chris Brown are secretly back together/still in love with each other like always.

Along with RiRi’s “Do Ya Thang,” the song “We All Want Love” is comparable to Adele’s album, “21,” in that it is perfect for those fresh out of a relationship. Why do I like it? It’s the kind of song that speaks to you.

“Where Have You Been” has a similar electro house feel to “We Found Love,” but it also incorporates hints of rock and hip hop, making a song that most any house DJ would include on his set list.

“Birthday Cake” is a definite hip-hop song for those who prefer hip-hop over house. It’s not-quite-PG-13 themes combined with juke appropriate rhythms make it a song worth listening to if you like to get down like that.

“Watch n’ Learn” is another not-quite-PG-13 song, but it is the perfect song if you’re in the mood for something upbeat that’s not electro house.

Rihanna’s latest single released on January 11, 2012, “Talk that Talk,” features Blue Ivy’s rapper dad, Jay-Z. Why do I like this song? It’s all hip hop has an all together different vibe than many of the other songs on the album. Expect this song to start infiltrating the airwaves throughout the rest of this bitter cold winter before a song like “Do Ya Thang” makes it way to the top of the charts.

The thing that makes “Talk that Talk” different than any of her other albums, including “Loud” is that it is an album with plenty of potential for many hit singles. The question is: does RiRi have enough star power to go up against the likes of Michael Jackson and Katy Perry for the title of the artist with the most hit singles off one album? We’ll find out as we move forth in 2012, but for now, you should check out Rihanna’s album on Spotify. Never heard of Spotify? It’s an endless music library filled with virtually any song you could ever want to listen to, ever. Get it now!

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
