Music Blog: Above and Beyoncé

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

She’s a bootylicious survivor that runs the world like a diva with a big ego. Now you could probably count the pregnant women you know who are that fly on one hand. And even through that pregnancy she is still coming out with new music videos and doing spectacular performances. Like how about that VMA performance? It’s unreal that she’s pregnant and was wearing those heels, especially since I’m a twenty year old college student and I still don’t think I’ve ever worn heels that high.

My personal favorite of her recent accomplishments is her “Countdown” video. I’ve watched it so many times that when I hear the song now, the video flashes through my mind. There was some debate over Beyonce possibly plagiarizing choreography in the video, but Beyonce has handled that situation respectably. Belgian choreographer, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, accused her of copying the thematic elements and costumes used in the ballet “Rosas Danst Rosas.” The similarities are definitely evident, but Beyonce did admit that she was inspired by the choreographer’s work. Despite that whole ordeal, the video was amazing.

The video features Beyonce in casual, but chic outfits as she dances around a studio with her back-up dancers. Not only are the moves something you can’t take your eyes off of, but the way the video is edited keeps you entertained the entire time. Sometimes it flashes from scene to scene, others it’s Beyonce in the same place with just her outfit changing colors. For the entire three minutes and thirty-three seconds you are glued to the computer screen just watching her every move. The fact that she is absolutely flawless with her animated facial expressions also helps.

Another video she recently released is “Love On Top.” It’s so simple, but so perfect. It also doesn’t hurt that the song is one of the best to dance around and sing at the top of your lungs to. It shows Beyonce in what appears to be a studio apartment accompanied by male back-up dancers. As the video goes on, Beyonce changes her outfits frequently, mostly to different suits. Only Beyonce could look that awesome in a suit, or a variety of suits. The choreography in the video also looks so simple that it makes you want to learn it so you can break out into the dance every time “Love on Top” comes on at Kams. Seriously though, I’m doing that.

The most recent video she released is “Party.” In this video B stomps around a trailer park looking like a diva. Her outfits are all really high fashion and when you’re watching you catch yourself thinking, how on earth can she pull off the orange furry jacket so well? Then you remember – it’s Beyonce. The girl can honestly do no wrong. The video also has some cameos from both Kelly Rowland and her sister Solange. It’s not one of her best videos because there’s no choreographed dance sequence. She still looks fabulous though.

I’m sure there are only more great things to look forward to with Beyonce. Especially her baby! When her child is born, it will be the beginning of a whole new era of incredible. I cannot wait!

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
