Every year it feels like the pressure increases to have “the best summer ever.” Bucket lists, Pinterest boards and group chats are created–all with the intention of making a memorable experience.Â
Throughout the years, I have found that the summers with the fewest plans and expectations were the ones to remember. Playing it by ear and prioritizing my relaxation always seems to work in my favor. Here are some tips and tricks to creating a memorable AND relaxing summer.
don’t say yes to everything
Oftentimes, with the intentions of having a fun-filled summer, accepting every invitation feels like the right choice. However, this often leads to over-scheduling, not leaving enough time for yourself and to relax.
Instead, take time to consider the event. Think about whether it will overlap with any pre-existing commitments and if it is something you would genuinely like to be a part of.
Prioritize family time
Hanging out with friends is a great way to spend your summer, but remember to make room for your family as well. Although the activities you do with your friends can be considered to be more “fun,” slowing down for a family dinner or movie night can be a great way to relax.Â
As college students, it can be hard to balance your hometown friends and family. Making time for both of them can be immensely fulfilling.
Take time for yourself
This tip really transformed the way I think about summers. Yes, they are great for connecting with family and friends, planning trips and having fun. However, they are also great for resetting and recharging for the upcoming school year.Â
Utilize the summer to learn new hobbies, spend time on your skincare and even just lounging around. With a jam-packed school year, it can be healing to spend time doing absolutely nothing at all.Â
I would also recommend spending time reflecting inwards, and conducting a reevaluation of your personal goals. Reflect on your path at college, your future career goals and your past achievements. Doing so can help you stay motivated to get work done during the school year.
Reconnect with Nature
Summer is a perfect time to go for a hike, spend time at the beach or even just a walk through your local park. Spending time in nature, taking time to literally “touch grass,” helps put your goals and worries into perspective. It can be grounding to get out of your own bubble and to remember that there is a whole world out there.
Sitting outside, observing the way nature interacts with itself, is my favorite way to slow down and relax. With gorgeous weather during the summertime, it’s definitely not hard to do so.Â
