HC Illinois: Summer Makeup Trends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Like most people, summer is my favorite season. In my opinion, there’s nothing better than no school, barbeques, sundresses, bonfires, wedges and of course, summer makeup. Summer brings the perfect opportunity to try new makeup trends and the makeup trends for Summer 2011 definitely do not disappoint the beauty lover.

1. Bright Lips: I’ll admit…I’ve been a fan of the bright lip trend since seeing a Dolce and Gabbana ad campaign last summer featuring a model with bright lips and immediately bought a lipstick to try to recreate it on myself. However, the trend has definitely become more popular over the past year and it’s here to stay for Summer 2011.  This trend was shown on plenty of the Spring/Summer 2011 runways, from a tangerine color at Marc by Marc Jacobs to matte pink at Diane von Furstenberg to neon pink at Fendi. While seemingly a bit more avant-garde, this trend translates surprisingly well into an everyday look. A color that I found works well on most people who want to try out the bright lip is a pink fuchsia color; this color flatters most complexions and is a great way to experiment with the trend while still staying within your beauty comfort zone. Revlon’s Just Bitten Lip Stain collection has a color called Passion that I particularly love and use myself. You can layer the lip stain to make the pink as bright as you want, or just do a simple sweep if you’re feeling less adventurous. MAC also makes a good fuchsia lipstick, called Girl About Town. Prep work is necessary in order to pull this look off; make sure to exfoliate and moisturize beforehand, as bright lipstick will show every imperfection. In order to wear this bright lip trend every day, keep the rest of your makeup relatively simple with a light foundation and touch of mascara.

2. Bright Eye shadow: Another popular makeup trend for this summer is bright eye shadow. This look was all over the runways, shown at Jason Wu and Oscar de la Renta, among many others. The bright shadow trend can go two ways: either pastel colors (great on any skin tone due to their heavy pigment) or jewel tones. To make this trend into an everyday look, I recommend sticking to pastels for daytime, while creating a fun, modern-day smoky eye out of jewel tones for night. L’Oreal HIP Studio Secrets Professionals line makes eye shadows with high pigment that are perfect for trying out the pastel trend on a budget. Lancôme also has a new palette called “Pop Cherub”, which features pink, blue and green: perfect colors to use while experimenting with the trend. Make Up For Ever Professional also has a line of matte eye shadows that work well to create a pastel eye or a jewel-toned smoky eye. I’m a big fan of these eye shadow compacts and I personally use the 092-Purple eye shadow for times when I want to do a jewel-toned smoky eye.

3. Metallics: Yet another makeup trend that will be popular for Summer 2011 is the metallic trend. This look was shown across runways at Anna Sui, Thakoon and Rodarte. Don’t worry if you are not feeling daring enough to try the gold lip and eye combo like that of Rodarte, this look can easily be made your own. Use gold or copper eye shadow to create a look appropriate for everyday or layer the colors on top of each other to create a tamed-down smoky eye for nighttime. A gold and copper combination that I like is L’Oreal HIP Studio Secret Professionals metallic shadow in Charged. It’s the perfect combination of copper and gold and very wearable for everyday. Bobbi Brown Rockstar Metallic Eye Shadow is another great option.

With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
