After four long years, Euphoria season three is finally here. Although the last two seasons of Euphoria were just as exciting and full of drama, we can clearly see a huge change in the lives of the main characters.

Because it has been so long since the first two seasons, there has been a shift with the entire aura of the show. We remember Euphoria seasons one and two to have darker colors like purple, the characters wearing eye shadow makeup looks, but now, everything seems to have a brighter hue. Some fans online think the change in the show’s colors could mean something deeper.

With Euphoria’s comeback feeling so different, there’s been some hate going around online. People get attached to the original vibe and feel like nothing can top it, especially since Euphoria is such a nostalgic show for many of us. So, when the season three teaser dropped, the comments were full of people criticizing it. A lot of them were saying things like “what is this show even about anymore?” or “I feel like we’re losing the plot.”

After waiting four years for one of the most popular shows in America to release their third season, it can’t just feel the same all over again. After all, the characters in season one and two were in their late years of high school and it only makes sense for season three to show what they are up to now as adults.

There are still moments that remind you why people feel in love with Euphoria in the first place. The very first scene of the new season stood out to me the most. Rue was trying to get across the border with the car balancing on the fence. This scene was creative, unrealistic and chaotic. Right off the bat the show had me at the edge of my seat immediately.

However, not everything hits the same. One thing feels a little off is the timeline. Season three taking place in the year 2020, right when the COVID pandemic hit, makes everything feel a bit too real. Part of what made the earlier seasons so interesting was how dreamlike everything felt. Bringing in something as real as a global pandemic kind of takes away from the escape.

There are also small details that just don’t add up. For example, Maddy Perez having a pink iPhone 16 in 2020. That iPhone model did not even exist yet. It’s the little things that can pull you out of the story, especially in a show that people play close attention to.

At the end of the day, I don’t think the show is really the issue. It’s just different now, and people don’t always handle change well. The characters have grown up and their lives have changed. It would honestly feel weird if everything stayed the same.

I believe a lot of it boils down to nostalgia. Season one had that shock factor and a vibe that people got attached to. This doesn’t mean that the new season is bad, it’s just “a new chapter,” as Ali says. So, has Euphoria lost the plot? Maybe a little, maybe not. But it’s still messy, still dramatic and still has everyone talking. That is exactly why people aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
