Freshman Blog: Guide to Mom’s Weekend 2012

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

The month of April is finally here, which means the most important women in our lives will soon be making a visit to campus: our moms! The University of Illinois’ Mom’s Weekend is taking place April 20-22, and there are a lot of fun-filled events planned that both moms and daughters are sure to enjoy. Check out these great ideas for places to go and things to do for some ideas to make the weekend unforgettable.

Flower Show/Arboretum

Every year for Mom’s Weekend, the Horticulture Club hosts a flower show, in which it shows off gardens created and constructed by University students. Your mom will love looking at all the beautiful, fresh flowers and getting some ideas for her own garden. This year, the Flower Show will take place at the Stock Pavilion on Pennsylvania Avenue in Urbana at 9 a.m. on Sat., April 21 and 10 a.m. on Sun., April 22. If you miss the Flower Show, you can still take mom to the Arboretum, which is a beautiful place to spend a couple of hours walking around and taking pictures on a nice day.

Craft Fair

It’s no secret that most moms love cutesy crafts and any kind of shopping experience. If this sounds like your mom, be sure to head over to the Craft Fair in the Illini Union Ballrooms on Sat., April 21. This event starts at 10 a.m., and many vendors from shops all over Champaign and Urbana will be there showing off and selling lots of trinkets, jewelry and other fun things. Mom will love doing some shopping, and maybe she’ll even pick you up a little something!

Shows and Performances

There are several shows occurring all over campus during Mom’s Weekend. From a cappella group concerts to comedy shows to theater performances, you will definitely be able to find something that both you and Mom will enjoy. The University of Illinois Theatre Department will be performing the classic American play, Our Town, at the Krannert Center’s Colwell Playhouse all weekend. Performances run Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m.. If your Mom is more of a musical person, the Illini Union Board is presenting Chicago: The Musical at Assembly Hall at 2 p.m. and 7 P.M on Saturday. Take Mom out to a nice dinner, followed by a show, and she will have a fantastic time!

Check out the Illini Union’s website for the full schedule of Mom’s Weekend events. There is no limit to the exciting things you can do on Mom’s weekend, so show Mom how much you care by making it an enjoyable mother-daughter experience!

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
