Freshman Blog: Do’s and Don’ts of Unofficial Weekend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

The weekend everyone has been waiting for has finally arrived. Unofficial St. Patrick’s Day is scheduled for this Friday, March 2nd, and it is sure to be a day and weekend to remember (or not remember depending on your plans…). We’ve all heard the crazy stories about what happens on this day, and finally the Class of 2015 will be able to experience the fun and insanity for ourselves. Whatever your plans for Unofficial may be, here are some do’s and don’ts to help you survive the weekend with yourself and your dignity still in tact.

DO: Carry an Umbrella

For those of you who have looked at the weather forecasts for this Friday, you might know that there are apparently some scattered thunderstorms on the horizon. Be sure to tuck a small umbrella in your cross-body bag so you can avoid getting caught in a full-on downpour in the middle of Green Street.

DON’T: Make Yourself an Easy Target for Police

It’s no secret that the University and the Champaign-Urbana police are seriously cracking down on Unofficial this year, so naturally, the cops will be out in full-force. Be conscious of what you’re doing, and don’t make yourself an easy target for police by walking across the middle of the street, drinking outside, or carrying a bottle of open alcohol. Nobody wants that $300 drinking ticket, much less anything worse, such as an arrest.

DO: Wear Green

Whether or not you decide to participate in the activities of Unofficial, show some Irish pride, and wear green for the day. It’s an easy, non-risky way of being a part of this crazy tradition. If you really want to get in the spirit, wear your special Unofficial t-shirts and sweatshirts, throw on some green accessories, and tie a green ribbon in your hair!

DON’T: Go to Class Drunk

Though going to class drunk seems like a funny idea, resist the urge. You will call some unwanted attention to yourself, and will definitely have a hard time showing your face in class on Monday morning. Also, it doesn’t give your professor or T.A. the best impression of you, which can come back to bite you in the long run.

DON’T: Feel Guilty for Not Participating

Sometimes people can make Unofficial feel like the be-all and end-all of your college experience. If drinking large quantities of alcohol is not your thing, don’t feel bad about it! It’s not a big deal if you decide not to participate, especially considering all the repercussions for drinking underage. Ignore the drunks on the street calling you names for being of the few sober people. Take a walk during the middle of the day with some friends, and you’ll be sure to see some very interesting sights. Then, plan a movie night at night, get a lot of snacks, maybe order in some food, and just relax and take it easy.

DO: HAVE FUN!

The purpose of Unofficial is to have fun, so go out and have the time of your life participating in this U of I tradition! Be safe, be smart, and you will be sure to have a blast, while not getting in trouble, completely embarrassing yourself, or getting sick. Erin Go Bragh!

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
