Fashion Blog: The Ultimate Gift Guide

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

With the holidays right around the corner, it’s time to start thinking of gifts for your friends and family. When brainstorming for the perfect gift, why not think about some ways to spice up their wardrobe? There’s nothing I love more than getting an item of clothing or a cool, new accessory that I wouldn’t typically buy myself for Christmas. Here are a few gift ideas for the fashionista on your Christmas list.

In my opinion, a great gift for any girl on your Christmas list is an embellished bag. Regardless of if you’re buying for your best friend, sister, mom, (or even yourself), an embellished clutch is a great way to buy something that looks luxe but isn’t particularly expensive. There are variations of the embellished clutch that you can purchase, depending on who you’re buying for. I really like both the Aztec-looking beaded clutch by French Connection and the Arizona bag by Akira below, and it would be perfect for my sister or anyone on your gift list who has more of a bohemian aesthetic when it comes to her style. For most of my friends, I would pick one of the chic, beaded purses that are perfect for going out. I particularly like Bettie hand beaded clutch by Akira-it would be a perfect accessory that my friends would use to go out and dress up any outfit.

Scarves are another great gift idea for any one on your list. No one can have too many scarves! They instantly add something to an outfit and they’re the perfect gift-cute, comfy and everyone loves them. One of my favorite type(s) of scarves are infinity scarves-they are perfect for the cold winters in Champaign. I would buy some of the chunky, knit options in bright colors, such as the Akira Infinity Loop Scarf or the Angora Cable Snood from Topshop shown below, for my friends or sister and chose something in a more elegant fabric or pattern, such as the Ochre Grunge Jersey Snood, for my mom.

Of course, the ultimate gift that I love giving and receiving is jewelry. I prefer getting jewelry that I typically wouldn’t pick out for myself and I love any sort of statement pieces and that’s the same mentality I use when purchasing jewelry for my friends or family. For my friends, I really like the Premium Facet Necklace by Topshop, or the House of Harlow Leather Station Necklace from Akira. I love the color of the Premium Facet Necklace-it looks so fresh and would perfectly dress up any of their outfits for going out in the winter. For my mom, I would pick something like the Premium Metal Stone Necklace; I think the chunky gold material with the big stones looks elegant and would look nice with a lot of the darker colors she wears. For my boho-chic little sister, I would pick something like the House of Harlow Gold Plated Sunburst necklace from Akira or the Native Beaded Bracelet from Topshop.

Don’t forget about the boys on your list! Wondering what to get your dad, best guy friend or boyfriend? Clothes are a great option. Boy’s clothes are so fun to pick out and you can convince them to dress a little better at the same time! (Not that he needs it). Win win. After consulting with some reliable sources, I’ve compiled a list of some options of foolproof clothing choices for men: sweaters, new checked/plaid shirts for every day or a fun sport coat that he typically wouldn’t pick out for himself. Check out Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers or J. Crew for a great selection of sweaters in different colors that he’s sure to love, H&M and Topshop men’s section for a ton of inexpensive sport coats and Nordstrom or Banana Republic for any button up shirts.

Happy shopping!!

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
