Fashion Blog: Sleepwear Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

When you get ready for bed, do you care about what you’re wearing? Probably not, right? I was watching old episodes of How I Met Your Mother and in season 4, episode 7, Barney Stinson, the sartorial womanizer of the show, revealed that he wears a suit even when he goes to bed. He sacrifices his comfort for style wearing his suitjamas. He said he has to sleep in a certain position so that his suitjamas do not wrinkle and are in pristine condition. Barney thinks that there will always be a chance that there will be a knock on his door one night and a beautiful woman would be behind it, thoroughly impressed with his suitjamas.

So, comfort or style? Barney ended up swapping his suitjamas for a much more comfortable choice: the nightgown. But, why not have both comfort and style?

A majority of my female peers probably have a very casual sleepwear dress code, especially those in dorms: oversized tee or a tank and shorts or sweats. You don’t want to be prancing around in a nighty or lingerie in the hallways, do you? Not all nighties are lace and chiffon. There are tamer varieties out there that are safe to wear outside the bedroom. I’m not saying to go to Chipotle in your nighty, but you won’t be restricted to the bedroom.

Casual:

Sexy:

I prefer wearing a nighty in bed. It is way more comfortable than just a bra and panty. Bras feel too restrictive and nighties keep you a little bit warmer. I sport a black and white leopard print nighty my roommate gifted me two years ago. I’ve worn it out to Walmart during late night grocery shopping adventures (under a jacket of course) and my friends have told me they thought my nighty was a dress. A friend came over once and I was lounging around in my nighty and he asked, “You sleep in that?”

I also own a romper and it is fun to wear. You can do cartwheels around the apartment and don’t need to be afraid of flashing anybody. Basically, you can romp around! Rompers were very trendy a few seasons back and still are, in and out of the bedroom. The downfall of rompers is that they are incredibly annoying when you need to pee. You have to either take the whole top part off or unbutton all your buttons depending on the style you have. There is basically no easy way to take off a romper and not be half naked when you have to use the bathroom. But they’re cute!

The cheapest and best sleepwear is probably your birthday suit. Embrace your body! Personally, I love the feeling on blankets on my skin, so I think it’s the most comfortable way to go.
You’re going to bed, so comfort is the highest priority. What’s the point in wearing something that makes you itchy or is too tight in bed? You won’t be able to fall asleep and that is the most important thing because less sleep means a less fabulous you!

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
