Going back to school for a new semester is always so exciting–reunited with friends for the week of fake responsibilities that is Syllabus Week. However, if you’re anything like me, your wardrobe from last semester might be feeling a little dull, a little worn, and definitely not right for a fresh start in 2012. Well, don’t worry! I’ve listed three trends to try this semester that will spice up your wardrobe and have you feeling fabulous in the new year.

1. Color blocking
I recently became interested in color blocking after seeing a picture of Sarah Jessica Parker looking fabulous while partaking in the trend. This concept is nothing new, but celebrities and fashion houses have been using the color blocking more and more recently. It’s been popping up everywhere! Color blocking basically involves taking two bright colors and putting them together to make a unique color combination. For head-to-toe color blocking, like Sarah Jessica Parker and Rihanna, invest in a bright colored pair of pants or skirt and pair it with another solid colored shirt. You can do this with pretty much another color combination, but I think orange and pink, orange and purple, turquoise and bright blue, and yellow and pink look particularly great together. If you don’t want to commit to the head-to-toe color block look, don’t worry because you can still try out the trend. Try mixing a bright blazer with another colored top and jeans for a toned down version of the trend. You can also buy a piece that already features color blocking to take the guesswork out of the composition. I’ve attached pictures of Sarah Jessica Parker and Rihanna’s color blocking below for inspiration, as well as some good color blocking pieces. All the pieces listed below are from Asos.

2. Bright Jeans
Bright jeans have also been very popular with celebrities recently. I took the plunge, purchased a mint green pair for myself, and am very happy I did! A great substitute for basic blue jeans, these bright-colored options make any outfit feel fresh. You can also pair a pair of bright jeans with a bright-colored top and automatically employ the aforementioned color-blocking trend. Below, I’ve listed four examples of great bright-colored jeans. The first two are from Forever 21 and the second two are from Asos. Although I love them all, I particularly like the high-waisted element on the lilac pair from ASOS.

3. Fur
Fur is another popular trend that I love. I found a vintage fur vest of my mom’s in the attic over winter break and have been wearing it everywhere! I love that the fur vest is a nod to one of my favorite fashion eras, the 1970s. Fur is  also absolutely perfect for these freezing winter months in Champaign. Of course, real fur isn’t necessary; there are plenty of faux fur options available. Pair this trend with understated leggings or jeans to let the fur speak for itself and avoid looking too overdone. Below I’ve chosen four of my favorite fur pieces: two from Asos and two from Shopbop.

Welcome 2012 by trying a new trend–color blocking, bright jeans, or fur–and instantly update your wardrobe for the new semester and year!

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
