Fashion Blog: Comfy choices for class

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

With midterms currently underway (and amost over – here we come SB 2012!) and the end of the year just around the corner, getting ready for class probably isn’t our number one priority. However, it should be more of a priority for every college student. Although it isn’t proven that dressing nicely makes you more productive on the job, it does make you feel more confident and professional, which typically makes you succeed in school. I’m not advocating getting dressed like you’re getting ready for a night out for class, but there are some ways that it is possible to look cute and comfy for everyday. Below I’ve listed some of my favorite looks for spring which are prefect to throw together for class. They will make you look put together and polished, while still feeling comfortable enough to sit through hours of your professor’s boring sociology lecture.

It takes just as much time to throw on an Illinois t-shirt as it does a shirt that makes you look put together, so one thing I absolutely love to wear to class is a simple looking shirt with an interesting twist that makes them unique. Below I’ve attached four great, different options of shirts with interesting detail that will make you feel cute and comfy during class. All of these shirts are from Urban Outfitters.

Ikat and Aztec patterns have been big for the last few seasons, and they’re still here to stay for spring. I like the alternating patterns on the shirt and the muted colors..it looks almost worn and is you stole it from your mom or big sister. I also like the cut-out shoulders; it makes the shirt that much more interesting and unique

A simple white button down can never steer you in the wrong direction. I was drawn to this shirt by the fabric-it’s perfect for spring and will keep you feeling cool even with the long sleeves. Pair it with a pair of jean shorts as shown in the picture for a perfect way to look a little dressed up for class, while still being comfortable.

I absolutely love this shirt. The sheer panelling in the back makes it unique, while the off the shoulder neckline makes it still look casual enough for class. Pair it with leggings, boots and a chunky scarf while it’s still cold out and with jean shorts for the springtime.

Chambray shirts are one of my favorite things to wear to class, so why stop when the weather gets nice? I love how this shirt combines a traditional chambray material with a sleeveless silhouette and the frayed detail around the arms makes it look a little rough around the edges. I would pair this with colored shorts to mix the two trends of chambray shirts and colored denim.

As the weather begins to heat up in Champaign, there is nothing that girls love wearing more than a good pair of shorts. Shorts are the perfect springtime piece of clothing-they can be dressed up or dressed down and worn alone or with tights if the weather isn’t warm enough. There are so many different types of shorts shown this season that regardless of your personal style, you are sure to find a pair that works with you.

There are few things I love more than a good pair of high waisted shorts (which is probably why I’ve featured three in this article). These shorts are so cute because they combine the feminine silhouette of a high-waist while also being distressed. I love the four button in the front with the distressed detailing on the bottom and front of the shorts. Absolutely perfect for class!

These next two pair of shorts are a slightly more dressy take on your typical, everyday shorts. The color of the first pair and the tie waist really make them stand out from other shorts you might see around campus. I also love the second pair due to their color (perfect for summer) and the scalloped bottom detail.

The last pair of shorts are also a perfect way to incorporate the colored denim trend into spring and summer. These shorts are from Urban Outfitters and are a modern twist on their classic pair of denim. I especially love the coral color: it’s a new take on colored denim besides your typical red or blue.

Any of my friends can tell you that one of my favorite things to wear when the weather gets warm are dresses. Some people might call dresses a little too girly to wear to class, but I think if you chose the right style of casual dress it can look perfect for everyday. Below I’ve listed a few option of some dresses that I would love to wear to class. All three of these dresses are from Urban Outfitters.

I love the mod look of the first dress. The black and white dress made modern by the alternating size stripes throughout it. It’s a very simple silhouette, but it’s dressed up slightly by the interesting pattern. I would wear this dress with a jean jacket and fun sandals to class any day of the week.

The second dress has a little bit of the Aztec vibe that I previously mentioned, while still staying casual with a very relaxed silhouette. I especially love the cut of this dress, the fitted waist makes it perfect for pretty much every body type.

The third dress gives a nod to the 1920’s Gatsby-look that is so popular for spring. I love the unstructured shape of the dress and the white color makes it light and airy for spring and summer. This dress would be great with a colored jacket or an interesting bag and would translate well from day to night by throwing on heels and some fun jewelry.

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
