CU Style Blog: Scarf Surfing – From Online to On Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Illinois chapter.

Being on the Illinois campus, us college stylistas are limited when it comes to finding variety in accessories. So, if you’re anything like me, you’re scrambling through the Internet trying to find the newest scarves for Fall, before the heavy winds blow in and it’s too late. This week I found five UIUC Collegiettes with necks dripping in draped gold, and scoured my favorite shops on the World Wide Web to find scarves inspired by Champaign-Urbana style itself.

Leah Guadagnoli: CharlotteRusse.com is notorious for low prices and basic pieces. I found a scarf in a color very similar to Leah’s for a whopping $10, a deal any girl would have a tough time passing up. A simple elegant scarf flows symphonically with a contrasting coat and sheer tights.

Boots: Urban Outfitters
Jacket: Thrift Store
Her Fashion Secret Weapon: Belts

Malora Pollack: A flowy scarf adds flair to an otherwise casual or comfortable outfit. I hit up ModCloth.com whenever I’m craving anything with a vintage feel, because the site incorporates one of a kind vintage pieces AND company manufactured clothing. For $18 you can jazz up rainboots and leggings with a scarf that’s a real breath of fresh air.

Maeve Devitt: If you think there’s nothing cuter than clothing printed with adorable animals, than Urbanoutfitters.com is your one stop shop. Not only did I find my version of the patterned scarf on Urban’s online store, but so did CU Stylista, Maeve! They come in bright colors so top off a simple jacket/jeans combo with this finishing touch.

Rupa Jogani: In Illinois, staying warm is essential to our closets. Nastygal.com, a true fashionista’s paradise, has an amazing selection of the chicest ways to keep warm, including stylish heavy scarves. Rupa sports a black leather jacket and denim with a plaid knit scarf for an edge on a windy day.

Her Fashion Secret Weapon: Caesar Coin Necklace from Francesca’s

Alexandra Bizios: There’s no doubt you’ll stand out in an exotic-inspired scarf, especially when worn against a solid color, as shown by Alexandra. Anthropologie.com is my go to when I’m looking for classic pieces that I’ll most likely keep in my wardrobe for years to come, and I believe a pashmina scarf is a piece of clothing to last a lifetime.

I’l bet all you true CU Stylistas have already got new tabs open, ready to do some Scarf Searching!

A few tips before you buy:
1. Only splurge on a scarf if you KNOW you will wear it more often than once a season.
2. You don’t need the same scarf in every color. Instead, buy completely different style scarves in different colors.
3. Matching is overrated!

Now that you’ve got the tools, start clicking away at that keyboard! You never know what you’ll find once you dive in. Be bold, badass and happy browsing!

Emily Cleary is a 22-year-old news-editorial journalism major hoping to work in the fashion industry, whether that be in editorial, marketing, PR or event planning is TBD. With internships at Teen Vogue and StyleChicago.com, it's clear that she is a fashion fanatic. When she's not studying (she's the former VP of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta), writing for various publications or attending meetings for clubs like Business Careers in Entertainment Club, Society of Professional Journalists, The Business of Fashion Club, or for her role as the Assistant Editor of the Arts & Entertainment section of her school's magazine, she's doing something else; you will never find her sitting still. She loves: running (you know those crazy cross-country runners...), attending concerts and music festivals, shopping (of course), hanging out with friends, visiting her family at home, traveling (she studied abroad in London when she was able to travel all over Europe), taking pictures, tweeting, reading stacks and stacks of magazines and newspapers while drinking a Starbuck's caramel light frappacino, blogs and the occasional blogging, eating anything chocolate and conjuring up her next big project. Living just 20 minutes outside of Chicago, she's excited to live there after graduation, but would love to spend some time in New York, LA, London or Paris (she speaks French)!
